“Yes,” she said. “I’m exhausted. But I’m so happy I was able to help you save that precious little girl.”

He didn’t want to prosecute her. Jim White was just lucky she hadn’t killed him.

“Look, I know you thought you were doing the right thing, but the law is going to take care of Mr. White. He’s going to prison, and believe me, his hell is going to be similar to the hell he put you through. I’m going to let you go, but I suggest you get out of town. And the man has a lot of money. Find yourself an attorney and sue the hell out of him.”

She sobbed. “Thank you. Can I please speak to my family before I leave?”

“Of course,” he said and started up the truck.

What a hellish day, but good resolutions were worth it. If only they could find the other missing children and bring them home.

And now they had the person responsible for all the abductions. Damn him to hell.

CHAPTER16

Two days later, Trevor drove his sister to pick up her car in the impound lot.

“I think you should stay with us for a few days,” he said. “You’re off work for two weeks and you could use the rest.”

Jordan and Ely had both been at the hospital when she woke, but they were distant and cold. They were angry at her and she couldn’t blame them.

“No, I have some things I need to do,” she said. “An apology to make.”

A grin spread across his face.

“It wouldn’t have anything to do with the sheriff and his deputy, would it?”

She smiled. “I don’t know how you found out, but I need to make amends.”

What she needed to do was grovel and ask for their forgiveness. And there was the matter of the butt plug that she’d been wearing that day. If they were not going any further she needed to return it. But she truly hoped they would hear her side and forgive her for ever doubting them.

When they pulled up in front of the lot, her car was sitting outside.

“Thanks, Trevor, for bringing me. Go enjoy your new wife and your honeymoon. Everything here is fine,” she said.

Shaking his head, he stared at her. “I’m always going to worry about you. But you’re a good agent. I just wish you could forget about your friend and put this behind you.”

There was no way she could ever stop searching for the bad guys who abducted children. Never. Especially not after this case and speaking to Kaitlyn. The woman had been through so much.

“I love you, Trevor. I’ll be forever grateful to you for putting me through college, but this is something I have to do.”

And even if she fell in love with two lawmen, she hoped they understood that she would always put her life on the line to help save children.

She gave him a hug. “Enjoy your honeymoon.”

After she crawled out of his truck, she waved good-bye.

When she got up to the counter, the man smiled at her. “No charge, ma’am. Marta is my niece. We’ll be forever grateful for what you did.”

Warmth filled her heart. “Thank you. I’m just so glad we found her. Now I have to go in search of more missing children.”

“Good luck, ma’am. You’re an angel.”

No, she was only a damaged human with a goal to protect and fight for children.

Pulling out her keys, she walked to her car. Time to make amends with the two men who, she realized as she lay fearing she would be sent to Mexico, needed to know how she felt about them.

It was getting late and they would be at the office, but she was going to wait for them at the house. In fact, she stopped and picked up their favorite Mexican food dishes and hurried to their home.
