“You know Zoey’s roommate, Kayla, right?”

“Yeah,” I answer in a guarded voice. I mean, I know of her. Since Zoey and I were keeping things secret, it’s not like we got to know each other or anything.

“I spoke to her the other day.”

My brow furrows. “What?”

“We have a class together. The other day, she wanted to talk to me after class. I didn’t know who she was until she explained. Zoey got some pretty important news a couple days ago. News that might change the way you feel about what you need to do. News she’s been keeping from you.”

My breath hitches. My jaw clamps down as my whole body becomes taut with anxiety, waiting for Tristan to elaborate.

“You know Megan Sheffield, right?”

“Yes,” I say, kind of snapping at him. Will he stop asking me if I know of people I obviously do and just tell me what’s going on!?

“Megan talked to Zoey. She promised Zoey that she wouldn’t get in trouble for you two being together.”

It feels like a bolt of lightning just struck me. My spine straightens, my brow jumps up my forehead, my eyelids disappear.

“What?” I exclaim; my thoughts are so jumbled, a million things ricocheting back and forth in my mind, that I can hardly make sense of what Tristan just told me.

“But Zoey’s worried that if you knew that, you’d be willing to put your own career at risk, since Coach can still bench you.”

Before I even realize it, I’m standing. “She’s damn right I will.”

A smile curls on Tristan’s lips. “You think you need any more of a pep talk to go do what it takes to win her back?”

“Fuck no.”

Tristan takes another sip of beer, then tilts his head to the side. “What are you waiting for?”

I throw him a smirk, and then my legs start pumping.

I’m running across Ridley to Zoey’s apartment.

Zoey was right to worry that I’d be willing to put my entire career on the line to be with her. Because I am.

I love hockey, but I’d throw the game away in a second if it’s what I had to do to be with Zoey.

I almost knock someone over when I pull open the door and fly into the lobby of Zoey’s building. It wasn’t too long ago that I had to sneak around coming in here, trying my best to be as inconspicuous as possible.

I’ll never have to sneak around with Zoey again. Everything we do together will be out in the open.

Because wewillbe together. As long as her future isn’t at risk, there’s nothing that can happen to me that will keep me from being with the girl I love.

My heartbeat is pounding against my chest when I finally arrive at her door. I’m so hyped-up that I have to restrain myself for a second when I lift my hand to knock, not wanting to bang her door down.

Taking a deep breath to calm myself, I knock gently on her door.

My heartrate goes up a notch as I hear footsteps on the other end walking towards the door. My breath stops in my chest when I hear the lock unlatch. Every muscle coils with tension as I see the doorknob turn, and every millisecond feels like an hour as the door slowly starts to swing back.

Finally, there she is.

After what’s felt like an eternity, Zoey’s standing in front of me again.

I’m frozen. My brain is scrambled, my whole body thrumming with emotion.

To drink in her blue eyes again, to see her raven-black hair resting on her slender shoulders, to feel her energy, to just be in her presence again … it feels like I was somehow raised from the dead.
