As bad as I missed her before, now that I’m reminded of how good it feels just to be near her, I know I could never go back to being away from her. Not for anything.

I can see a gladness gleaming in those beautiful blue eyes that I know so well. I can feel, can sense that she’s happy to see me, just like I’m happy to see her. And that realization floods me with more joy than I can express.

We’re just standing here, looking at each other, neither of us sure what to say.

Both our lips are parted, as if we’re trying to put what we’re feeling into words, but the words fail us.

So, instead of trying to find a way to express something that can only be felt, I close my lips—onto hers, in a kiss.

ZOEY

My eyes flutter closed as Liam’s lips cover mine.

I feel like I’m going to melt into him. All the tension in my body washes away, replaced by the most perfect, serene comfort I’ve ever known. Nowhere feels safer than in Liam’s arms, with his lips pressed to mine.

I should be resisting this. I shouldn’t be letting Liam put his career at risk.

But there’s no way I can resist this. All my defenses are shattered, and the feelings for Liam that I’ve been trying to keep at bay are rushing in from every breach.

Liam’s familiar, masculine scent floods me as his velvety lips slant against mine; that’s all I need to surrender completely.

This is where I belong: in Liam’s arms. I should have known it all along. Whatever happens after this, we’ll figure it out, together.

As long as we’re together, I know that we can figure out anything, overcome any obstacle; and if we’re not together, I know that no success, no future, will ever compensate for that loss.

He pulls his lips away, and my eyes open. When they do, Liam’s piercing green eyes flood my vision. It feels like they reach in through my own, grabbing hold of my heart in a way that lets me know he’ll never turn away from me again.

“I love you, Zoey.”

His words make my chin tremble. My chest swells with emotion. I close my eyes, feeling the hot wetness of my tears nipping at the seam of my eyelids.

“Say it again,” I plead.

“I love you, Zoey.”

I swoon, falling into him and pressing my damp eyes to his chest. His strong arms cradle me, and he drops a tender kiss onto the crown of my head.

I blink some tears away and look up to him. “I love you, too Liam.”

His chest rumbles against me with a satisfied laugh, and the smooth vibration sends a blissful buzzing across me.

“I was really hoping you’d say that.”

My lips curl up so powerfully that I feel like they’ll make it all the way to my ears. I push my face back into his chest and rub it to dry the happy tears that stream down my cheeks.

“I take it you’re not going to be mad at me then?” I turn around to see Kayla peeking from the cracked-open door of her room, a knowing smile playing on her lips.

I put two and two together and realize she must have told Liam that I was in the clear thanks to Megan. Or, told someone who then told Liam. However it happened, she did the thing I made her promise me not to do when I told her about it.

It’s the only promise my best friend has ever made me that she didn’t keep, and I’m so glad that she didn’t.

I just shake my head, my lips still curled too far up in a smile for me to even use them to form words.

Kayla just nods, happiness for me shining in her eyes, before stepping back into her room and pulling her door shut.

I turn back to Liam. “But, my dad …”
