“You can do it honey,” her mum encourages from her other side, as her midwife stands between her legs waiting for our bundle of joy to arrive.

“The head is out Sophia. Little breaths that’s it, pant for me and I’ll tell you when the next push is and then we’ll have a baby,” the midwife informs us. Sophia looks up at me and I wipe her sweat covered hair back off her face.

“Nearly there, little bird,” I whisper, and her face sets with determination.

“Okay push.” Sophia gives it all she has before the room falls quiet. One beat, two beats, three beats before I close my eyes with a smile on my face to the sound.

“Waaaaahhhhh,” our baby wails through the room.

“It’s a girl,” the midwife announces, before she deposits her on Sophia’s chest and covers her with a blanket so they can have something called skin to skin contact which I’ve learnt is beneficial to them both.

“A girl?” I ask in shock.

“We have a daughter,” Sophia says, as we both look down at the little bundle lying on Sophia. She has a tiny bit of hair you can already see. It’s darker than Sophia’s but still has her red tinge in it, more of an auburn colour.

“Congratulations,” Kennedy gushes, as she peeks at her granddaughter. “Do you have a name?”

I turn to Sophia, and we look at each other smiling before we say in unison, “Sunday. Her name is Sunday.”

THE END.
