“How did I get so lucky to call you, my wife?” I say, as I round the desk and pull her into my arms.

“You’re crazy that’s why. But I love your crazy.” She kisses me as if she’ll never get enough and I don’t pull away until the coughing of Niko draws my attention.

“Yeah yeah. I’m coming,” I tell him, before kissing Sophia on the cheek in goodbye. “I’ll ride home with Niko and leave the car for you to drive home later.”

“Sounds good. See you later. Thanks Niko,” she calls out to my best friend, who waves goodbye.

“I think she’s got us both wrapped around her finger,” I joke to Niko, as we hop into his car.

“Don’t mess with a pregnant woman my man, that’s all I gotta say.”

“Yeah, I’m quickly coming to that conclusion,” I admit.

“How are things going? Are you missing the bar work?” Niko asks, as he turns on the highway headed to my gramps house which is now the only place I live.

“Nah I needed to give up the second job. Ted was sad to see me go but he’s got a new bartender who has taken up the lease for the apartment upstairs too, so it all worked out. I’m happy working at the auto shop and then coming home and relaxing with my wife every night to be honest. No better feeling than that mate.”

“Yeah, yeah so you keep saying. I don’t think I’ll be settling down any time soon.”

“You should try it. It might suit you,” I tease.

“One day I guess.”

We pull up to the house and head to the spare room where all the boxes of flat pack furniture sit.

“How about we start on the cot?” Niko suggests.

“Sounds like a good plan.” We make quick work of opening the box up and pulling out the pieces.

“Why don’t they have written instructions instead of just diagrams?” Niko whines, and I can’t help but agree. We’ve been working on the cot for an hour now and after putting the wrong sides on and having to take them off and change them, we are finally on the right track with Niko screwing in the last piece.

After it sits there finished, we stand back and admire our handy work. With smiles on our faces at our accomplishment, we both hold up a hand for a high five before we let out a chuckle.

“How about I start on the change table, and you can work on the wall decor. Then when you’re done, you can help me finish.” He nods in reply before grabbing the stack of cute animal wall stickers Sophia picked out.

“You guys still set on not finding out the sex?”

“Nah, we both want it to be a surprise. Doesn’t bother us either way.” I pull the white wooden pieces out of the box that match the white wood of the cot.

“I bet you’re glad you didn’t have to move premises in the end. I don’t wish ill on the dead but I gotta say, it worked out for you with the mayor’s death. Plus, it means he’s not here to interfere with the baby now.”

“Yeah, I think Sophia is still coming to terms with it because it was a shock. But the way he treated her, she realises she’s better off without him. The lawyers finalised everything and the business is securely back in my hands as of yesterday.”

“That’s awesome man. Seems like it’s all working out for you,” he says, as he claps me on the shoulder.

“Yeah man it does feel that way. I have the woman I love as my wife, a baby on the way, my business and we are settled here in my grandparents’ place. I don’t think life could get any better.”

“I’m happy for you Renz. Now let's get this sorted then we can relax with a beer,” he suggests, making me laugh.

“Sounds good.” A warm feeling in my chest spreads as my words circulate. I am one hell of a lucky man it all worked out in the end. I may have started from hard beginnings, but I feel with Sophia at my side, I’ve finally gotten the happily ever after I always wanted. Like the one my grandparents had.

“Push Soph, push,” I encourage her, as I hold one of Sophia’s thighs back.
