“No.” She realized they were talking about a fictional character, but he couldn’t mean that. Natasha was tough, sassy, gorgeous, hilarious.

“Yes.” He nodded, and then he pulled from her touch, pushed back to the bank, and picked up the shampoo. “Can I wash your hair?”

“Oh, yes, please.”

He smiled, squirted some of the shampoo into his hand, and then eased through the water to her.

Brylee trembled as he came in close and studied her.

“I think you’d better turn around.”

“Okay.”

“I can’t look at your beautiful face and do this without kissing you for a very, very long time.”

“I don’t see the problem with that.”

He chuckled but then grew serious and asked in a very beseeching tone, “Please turn around, Bry. I only have so much self-control.”

“I don’t know about that.” But she pivoted slowly around.

Cash eased in, his chest brushing against her back. She quivered. He rubbed the shampoo into her hair, working it in with his fingers and trailing his fingertips along her scalp and through her hair. The tingly sensation of her scalp being massaged was incredibly romantic. She felt connected to him and longed for his fingers to keep working their magic.

She moaned and didn’t even feel embarrassed about it. As his body pressed against her in the water and he kept working the shampoo into her scalp and hair, she was overwhelmed by his touch, his tenderness, the way he seemed to embrace her and her red hair.

He loved redheads. Ah, Cash. Everything about him was perfect.

He took a deep inhale and murmured against her ear, “I knew that smell would be a million times better when it mixed with your chemistry.”

She looked over her shoulder at him. “I like your chemistry.”

“Thank you.” He smirked at her. “Now please face forward again.”

Brylee rolled her eyes, but obeyed. She closed her eyes and simply enjoyed his fingers making her scalp tingle, the waterfall’s musical pattern, Cash close by, and the delicious scent of cinnamon and vanilla.

She would have to thank Mercedes for such a thoughtful gift. When she thanked her for the million dollars. If she ever got the million dollars. It was impossible to worry about that with Cash’s strong fingers entangled in her hair.

“Okay, lean back,” Cash said.

She lay back in the water, swirling her hands to stay afloat.

Cash worked the shampoo out of her hair and then he cupped the back of her neck and her lower back with his large palms. She relaxed against his hands and floated. The water was chilly, but she didn’t mind. Cash kept her plenty warm. Floating and relaxing was a reprieve on her back and neck after the constant movement and carrying her backpack for days.

Her ears started to feel pressure and she lifted her head, meeting Cash’s gaze. He looked down at her and then he bent and pressed a soft kiss to her lips. Brylee was more than ready for a long kissing session. She arched up toward him, but Cash pulled away and asked, “Conditioner?”

She nodded, hiding her disappointment. “Yes, please.”

He headed to the bank, got a squirt of conditioner, and came back. He worked it through her hair. This time, he didn’t ask her to turn away. They studied each other as he massaged the conditioner through her scalp and worked it through her long tresses. The moment was sweet and tender and somehow very serious. She wanted to probe about the secret he was hiding, but she couldn’t get her mouth to form the question or really to open at all.

“Rinse?” he asked.

“I’ll leave it on for a bit. It helps soften the hair and combat frizz.”

“Ah, girl hair talk.”

She smiled at him. “Yes. Do you want to use the body wash?”

“Yes, but I can wait until you’re out of the pool.”
