I nod, but this still feels like chasing shadows in the dark. “And if she’s untouchable?”

“Then make her notice you.”

I’m back to square one, grappling with more questions than answers. But one thing’s for sure, Sophie Trumon isn’t just another name on Alessandro’s list. She’s a puzzle piece in a game I’m itching to win.

And if there is one thing about me, I will always fucking win.

* * *

I’ve been on Sophie's tail for days, she’s playing a twisted game of cat and mouse. Every time I think I’ve got her pinned, she slips away like a wisp of smoke. But finally, I catch wind of her new parking spot, just ten minutes from the FBI headquarters. This girl’s got guts, I’ll give her that.

I stake out her car, watching from a distance. The moment seems right, so I make my move. Sneaking into her car, I start scanning for clues.

But then, the distinct click of a gun being cocked sends a chill down my spine.

“Who the hell are you?” Her voice cuts through the silence, the edge of steel in her tone.

“Hey, relax. Let’s talk this out,” I reply, trying to keep things cool. “I saw the cameras. I just wanted to know who’d be so reckless to break into your car... twice.”

She’s not buying it. I can sense the tension in the air, but I also know I could disarm her in a heartbeat. “Can I step out? We can chat like civilized folks.”

There’s a pause, then she takes a cautious step back. I comply, stepping out to face her. She’s something else, with those bold red lips and piercing brown eyes, tracking my every move.

“Don’t even try anything funny,” she warns, her gun steady.

I smirk, but before I can say a word, she aims the gun at me again. “Who are you?”

I try to play it smooth. “That doesn’t matter. I’ve been searching for you.”

She straightens, her posture rigid. “Why?”

“Put the gun down, and I’ll tell you,” I counter, hoping to ease the tension.

Instead, she aims square at my chest. “Try again.”

I take a deep breath, knowing it’s now or never. With a quick move, I disarm her, pinning her against the car in seconds. She struggles, but I’ve got the upper hand.

“Listen up, Sophie. I’m not your enemy. My boss wants a chat with you,” I tell her, slipping a card into her pocket. “How about not losing this one?”

She curses, her breaths heavy, as I release her and step back. “Hope to hear from you soon, Sophie Trumon.”

Reluctantly, I step away. She’s stunning, and something about her stirs emotions I’ve never felt before.

I’ve been in this game long enough to know when a curveball hits. But Sophie? She’s a whole new league. The way her eyes hold fire, the stubborn tilt of her chin... there’s a magnetic pull I can’t shake off.

I’ve dealt with dangerous people, but Sophie? She’s different. Her intensity, the way she carries herself, it’s like staring at a whirlwind in human form.

I can’t deny the sparks I felt between us. And as I walk away, I can’t shake off this feeling that there’s more to Sophie than meets the eye. This encounter? It’s just the beginning.

CHAPTERTWENTY-SIX

Giulio

I’m driving back home, thoughts whirling in my mind like a tornado. The night sky stretches endlessly above me, but my mind is tangled in a labyrinth of “what ifs.” What if I hadn’t been born into this life? What if the shadow of the mafia hadn’t loomed over me since birth?

As I reach home, I glance at the message from that unknown number. Sophie. I can sense it before she even speaks. There’s a photo, a storage unit. A meeting place.

I send a quick reply, confirming the time. Tomorrow at noon.
