“You feel it?” I tut, “That's the poison you drank from the coffee you were served by Rosaline. Even you have to admit that I beatyou at your game,” I wink at him and smile fully as his face falls flat and he turns white from realization.

“You…” he gulps, “What did you do?” He tries to scurry to me but his legs cave in and he drops his upper body on the kitchen island.

“This is how I want you to die,” I take the corner to him. “Don't worry about my reputation, I have recorded everything you've just said.”

“I am…” he starts to say and I fucking swear to God I will rip him apart if he fucking tries to apologize, “I am not going to die, you…” he spurts out foam and slumps to the floor.

“You were saying?” I chuckle, shaking my head at the corpse of the man who has cost me more than his life can pay for.

I pause.

No answer.

Phew.

I exhale sharply.

It's over.

Chapter Twenty-Eight

BENEDETTO

He is dying.

I kick his gradually swelling stomach with my bare toes and he stays unmoving, his face going pale as the poison completely starts draining the last residue of life in his eyes.

The knife he had intended to use on me is now beside him on the floor. His neck tilted to the side to reveal his reclining pulse. It's only a matter of seconds.

I cannot believe this has finally happened.

I mean, I have dreamed this dream for far too long. Killing him has always been an option, I had just never had the right motive to follow through. But now, seeing him on the floor, and knowing I did it for my father even though this cannot make up for his death, brings me a respite that is unexplainable.

Fuck those who say you cannot get satisfaction from revenge when they need you to not fight back. An eye for an eye will make the world go blind, fucking dimwits. An eye for an eye is what will teach everyone not to want to strike in the first fucking place.

I go down and place two fingers on his neck to feel his pulse and I smile some more confirming he is now dead.

“This is the end of the road for you, Uncle,” I cock my head to have a better view of his face, “this is how you die and if you ask me, you should have been grated and fed to the dogs.” I shove his head with the tip of my index finger and as soon as I let go, it falls back to the side, “See you in hell, Uncle.”

I stand and exhale sharply. I'm still smiling at myself when Rosaline scurries to me and throws herself at me. I catch her in my arms and spin her, then stop to kiss her deeply. This was made possible because of her bravery. There would have been no way anyone between Orazio and me would have been able to get close enough to give Claudio that poison.

I knew Claudio might see me coming if I decided to go the way I had initially planned when I first saw the letter in my father’s study and decided I was going to kill him. So many things would have gone wrong with that plan. But she and Orazio made the process a refined one, a smooth sail.

“Thank you,” I croak on her lips and kiss her again, “It’s over now,” I kiss her cheek, “It’s over baby,” I wrap my arms around her and hug her tightly.

“You did it,” she chuckles nervously.

I am not oblivious to her body shaking in my arms. I know it must have been a trigger for her because of her father’s death, but she never backed down. If anything, she offered herself willingly to make this work.

“We have to celebrate,” I pull away from her and place both hands on her shoulders.

“We have to,” she nods repeatedly, “Let’s get Orazio and your mother,” she points with her chin behind me.

I exhale. I know this will take a toll on my mother and I don’t exactly know where to start when she begins to fire questions at me. I don’t want to see her go back to four years ago. There’s no Claudio for her to run off and marry now to help her through the tragedy.

“I will talk to her, you go get Orazio.” I kiss Rosaline’s forehead as she moves to kiss me on the lips and we both laugh softly, and then she hurries to go get him.

Another deep exhale, and I turn, then walk to my mother. She is crouching on her side in a way that her face is turned to the wall.
