Sawyer snapped his attention to his father. “You are going too?”

“The last time I let you go alone, you negotiated with the pack. That’s not how this works.” Alpha Dane held his hands out. “They either agree to our terms, or they suffer the consequences.”

Sawyer poked at the food on his plate. “We are making enemies, Dad.”

The alpha shrugged. “We are finding out who is loyal to us, son. Don’t you forget that. This pack will be yours someday. I need to know it is in good hands. It’s unfortunate Mikey wasn’t born first. He’s got true potential. He just lacks the alpha gene.”

Mikey? I gazed at the empty chair. There was another brother.

I chewed slowly as I took in the conversation. Sawyer didn’t see eye to eye with his dad. Maybe my earlier assumptions that Lincoln wasn’t a monster were correct. Which meant Sawyer wasn’t one either.

Alpha Dane put his hand on Sawyer’s shoulder. “We are wolves. It’s natural for there to be a leader. These other packs know that.”

I poked at a potato with the end of my fork. How many packs did Alpha Dane plan to take over? My family and Willa’s weren’t the only ones. Packs in four other states had fallen to him too.

If he kept this up, he would run most of the Midwest. Would he stop there? Something told me no.

Alpha Dane continued, “That is why it is important that we grow our numbers with strong wolves with females from strong bloodlines.” He turned his attention to Willa and then to me. “Ichose the best of the best for my sons. But I want results. Our pack needs strong baby boys and girls.”

I glanced up at that and gazed from Lincoln to Sawyer and then back again. This wasn’t the kind of environment to have a child in. Luna only knew what Alpha Dane would demand of the kids when they got older.

He stood from the table. “It is getting late. The four of you should be retiring to your rooms. The full moon is tonight. Your mother always used to say full moons are when we are the most fertile. Full moons triggered a lot of her heats.” He rubbed his hands together as a gleeful smile spread over his face. “You four should be headed up to bed.”

The fork fell out of my hand and clattered against the plate. Was he serious?

Lincoln pushed back from the table and grasped me by the elbow, yanking me up with him. “It is getting late.”

I let Lincoln lead me from the room. My ears rang, and I walked back to the bedroom in a daze. This was insane. I needed to find a way to get out of here with Willa and protect our families.

Alpha Dane needed to be stopped. But how? And could I trust Lincoln? I worried my bottom lip as we made our way up the stairs to his room.

There was only one way to find out.

If he was on board with stopping his dad, great.

If not, it could mean an even more untimely demise for me.

Lincoln shut and lockedthe door once we were inside. I clasped my hands together and blew out a breath before turning to face him.

Here went nothing. “This is crazy.”

Lincoln looked at the floor. “I know. He is getting worse.”

“He is killing innocent families and alphas just because they don’t want to bow to his will.” I jutted out my arms and then let them flop to my thighs with a clap. “Everyone here just goes along with it.”

Lincoln looked up at that. His blue eyes swirled with emotions, and his jaw was set in a hard line. “You haven’t seen what happens to those who defy him, Sloane. It’s not as easy as trying to reason with him. Trust me, he can’t be reasoned with.”

I shuddered and wrapped my arms around myself. Yeah, I’d seen how he treated Sawyer, and that was his son.

Still though. “So, you’re going to just ignore what is happening?”

Maybe he could. I couldn’t.

Alpha Dane needed to be stopped.

I darted my gaze around the room like something in here might give me an idea. It didn’t. Lincoln’s room was dull and boring. He didn’t even have a TV for crying out loud. What did he do in his free time?
