Scratch that. I didn’t want to know.

He raked a hand through his hair. “Are you okay?”

I hugged myself tighter and gaped at him. “Okay?” A hint of hysteria filled my voice. “No. No, I’m not. You were at dinner with me. Areyouokay?”

He closed his eyes and drew in a deep breath. “I know it’s hard, but you have to stay calm, Sloane. He preys on people being scared. It’s how he gets his power.”

I choked back a laugh. “Yeah, well, it’s working.”

Lincoln closed the distance between us and put his hands on both my shoulders. “I’m not going to let him hurt you. Neither will Sawyer. You are our mate. Our true mate. We will protect you with our lives.”

I swallowed and met his eyes. “You felt it too? Did I really imprint on both of you?” My voice was barely a whisper.

He nodded and put one hand on my cheek. “We knew it was a possibility. I might not speak to many people in the pack, but Sawyer and I have always been close.”

A wave of heat scorched over me, and I shook my head as I pulled away from him.

I walked to the window and stared outside at the trees and the light drizzle that was starting to fall. “How could I imprint on both of you? I’ve never heard of that before.”

Two men. How did that even work? Would they fight over me? Share me?

It didn’t matter. I’d never get to know Sawyer. Not as long as Alpha Dane was in charge. I wasn’t sure I could risk getting to know Lincoln, either.

The floorboards creaked as Lincoln moved, but he didn’t come close enough to touch me. It was too bad; I wanted to feel the warmth of his arms around me, comforting me.

The bed squeaked as he took a seat. “Sawyer is my twin brother. We share a special connection. One that my father hasn’t been able to break. Believe me, he has tried.”

I looked over my shoulder. Lincoln was staring at his hands. They sat in his lap where he was fisting them and then flexing them.

“Special connection?”

“From what I understand, our connection is very similar to how mates are able to connect. It makes sense that we would share you. He is a piece of me and I of him. It drives my dad crazy.” Lincoln growled low in his throat. “He’s done so many things to break it.”

Tension gathered between my brows as I stared at him. “Why would he do that?”

Lincoln chuckled darkly. “He thinks it’s unnatural.”

I frowned and turned back to the window. “That’s crazy.”

“I know.”

I squeezed my biceps as I hugged myself tighter and gazed out at the trees. Freedom lay just beyond them. My home, my family were somewhere out there. My heart lurched, and tears pricked my eyes.

I wanted to go home, curl up in my bed, and pretend this was all a horrible nightmare. Leaving would only make things worse though. I knew now more than ever that Alpha Dane was insane. He would follow through on his threats. The bastard would enjoy it too.

Lincoln cleared his throat. “Sawyer is worried about us. He wishes he could be here.”

I turned around and narrowed my eyes. “How do you know that?”

He raked a hand through his hair and stood. “Our connection is unique. We can feel each other’s emotions and communicate. It’s a form of telepathy.”

He shrugged like that should explain it.

I pursed my lips and shook my head. “I’ve never heard of anything like that before. Not between siblings. Not even between mates.”

“Twins are rare among shifters.”

He had a point. They were the only twins I knew of, come to think of it. I’d been so caught up in everything else I hadn’t even thought about it until now.
