Was that part of being a Sigma? I hadn’t thought too much about how Lincoln had kept us to his room and only gone out when he had to, but it was all starting to make sense now.

Lincoln pulled himself to his full height. “I’m fine. Really.” He turned to his brother. “Take care of her.”

Sawyer nodded. “You know I will.”

I bit my lower lip and eyed Lincoln for a long moment. He looked better now. His cheeks were tinged a slight pink, and his breathing was normal.

Lincoln cleared his throat and went to the bathroom, and then he emerged a moment later with my shoes. “You need to go. Trust me, we don’t want to keep my dad waiting.”

He handed me my flats.

I shivered at the reminder and took my shoes from him. Our fingers touched as I did, and tingles shot through my arm from the contact. I opened my mouth and then closed it.

Fight it, Sloane.

I set my flats on the floor and wiggled my feet into them before turning to Sawyer. I smoothed a hand through my hair and sighed. The braids I’d put in after my shower were holding, but I was sure I still looked a mess. At least I’d be getting clothes to wear.

Anything had to be better than my borrowed, too-big sweats paired with a pair of black dressy flats. I was a walking fashion nightmare.

Sawyer opened the door. “Let’s go. We’ll grab Willa from my room and then head downstairs.”

I stepped into the hallway and looked over my shoulder, meeting Lincoln’s eyes for a long moment before Sawyer stepped in front of him and shut the door. I eyed the bedroom door, and I worried my bottom lip.

Sawyer put his hand on the small of my back. “It’s going to be okay. I’ll keep you safe. I promise.” His voice was a hushed whisper.

I melted into him and then stiffened, remembering where we were. I drew in a steady breath and pulled away from him, only to stop again. I didn’t actually know where his room was.

He must have sensed this. “Stay right here.” He hurried down the hall, stopped three doors down, and opened one.

Willa came out after a moment. When she saw me, a wide grin spread over her face, and she bounded forward and hugged me.

I held her close, glad to be able to touch someone else without going into a horny craze. “How are you?”

Willa blew out a breath and pulled back. She shot a glance toward Sawyer, who was watching us from the doorway. “Okay, I guess. I’m glad to be getting out of here.” She looked up and down the hallway. “This house gives me the creeps.” Her voice dropped to a low whisper.

I hummed my agreement. It was more the company than the house, I thought. Though when Sawyer strode toward us, I couldn’t help but think not all the company was bad. He was wearing dark wash jeans and a tee that showed off his bulging muscles. His dark hair was mussed like he just got up and he had a bit of stubble on his face that made me want to rub it.

My hands tingled as I fought the urge to reach out and touch him.

He moved around us and then turned back to face us. “My dad will go off by himself once he drops us off. Just stay quiet in the car.”

Willa made a noise in the back of her throat that sounded something like a whimper.

I put my arm around her shoulder. “We will.”

Sawyer eyed us another moment before leading us through the hall and down the stairs until we reached the foyer and stepped outside. It had only been a little while since I’d been out here, but the bright light of the sun blinded me, making me lift my hand to my forehead to block the rays.

Sawyer stepped in front of us. “This way. The two of you will sit in the back.”

He opened the back door. Willa slid in first, and then I took the seat directly behind Alpha Dane.

I pursed my lips and turned toward the window.

Alpha Dane revved the engine as Sawyer made his way around to the passenger side. He didn’t even wait for Sawyer to shut his door before peeling out down the driveway with the tires squealing.

He whipped us around the corners, banking the car like we were on the Indy 500 track. I tore my gaze from the window and instead focused on my hands.

Willa, on the other hand, held on to the handle over her door and made a groan every time the alpha took a turn.
