The more noise she made, the faster he seemed to go, like he was getting off on terrorizing her. I gritted my teeth. He probably was.

We took a sharp left, fast enough to make my head smack against the side of the car. I winced and rubbed the spot with my hand as I glanced at the front seat.

Alpha Dane was watching me from the mirror with a wide grin on his face.

Bastard!

He stared at me a moment longer before turning his attention to Sawyer. “You’ll have a few hours while I collect what I need. Get the ladies a few outfits, and take them to lunch. I’ll text you when I’m on my way back.”

Sawyer inclined his head. “Are you sure you should be going by yourself, Father? It’s not like you to go completely alone.”

“I’ll be fine. Just meeting a business contact to pick a few things up. I’ve known them for years. We’ll go over all the details over dinner tonight.”

“All right.”

Alpha Dane looked at the back seat again. “Keep an eye on them. I don’t think they’ll be stupid enough to try anything, but you never know. They belong to our pack now. They follow our rules.”

Sawyer turned so he was looking into the back seat. He looked from Willa to me. “They won’t be any trouble.”

The alpha made another sharp turn to make it through a traffic light before it turned red. Sawyer slammed back into the front seat, his back hitting the door as his hand went to the dash to brace himself.

The tires squealed, and then the alpha was slamming on the brakes. I lurched forward and probably would have hit the driver’s seat if my seat belt hadn’t caught me.

We came to an abrupt stop, and I fell backward into my seat.

Alpha Dane unlocked the doors. “I’ll see you in a bit.”

I fumbled for the handle on the door and let myself out. Willa scampered out the other side and ran for the stairs, and then she gripped the handrail for support.

I drew in a deep breath and kept my pace normal as I made my way to the sidewalk where I wrapped an arm around Willa. The poor girl fell against me and drew in deep, shuddering breaths.

Sawyer stayed in the car with his dad another few moments before he climbed out and joined us.

The car’s tires screeched against the pavement as the alpha peeled out of the parking lot.

Willa sniffled. “He does that on purpose, doesn’t he?”

Sawyer huffed and then nodded. “He enjoys the reaction. I know it’s hard, but try not to give him that satisfaction.”

Willa made a “pfft” sound and shook her head.

I gave her a squeeze. “Let’s forget about it for now, okay? We’re at the mall. I’m glad to be out of that dungeon, and we can finally get some clothes that are ours and fit.”

I tugged on my too-big tee for emphasis.

Willa gave me a small smile and pulled away. “You’re right.”

She made her way up the steps to the mall and led the way into the first shop.

I hung back and watched as she thumbed through the racks, aware of Sawyer standing next to me.

He was watching me. “You should find some stuff, too.”

“I know and I will.” I turned to face him, drawing in a deep breath at his closeness. His scent consumed me, and I leaned into him, partly because I needed to be close. Plus, I didn’t know who might be listening. “Is Lincoln okay?”

Sawyer closed his eyes and rubbed at them. “Yeah. He’s fine. Panic attack.”

“A panic attack?” That was the first time I’d ever heard of something like that happening to a wolf.
