A heavy weight pressed against my chest.

He’d rejected us.

Fourteen

A fitful night oftossing and turning only made the weight on my chest heavier. I pulled the blankets up to my chin and blinked. It was like someone was stepping on my belly, keeping me from drawing in a deep breath.

Sawyer had ripped my heart out. Torn it in two. He hadn’t come back.

Lincoln had paced while I’d curled into a ball in bed. He’d eventually joined me, spooning me until I’d fallen asleep.

Sleep hadn’t lasted long. Lincoln’s arm draped over my hip. His warm breath ghosted over my ear as he slept behind me. The light filtering in from the curtains told me we’d have to get up soon.

We were expected back at the pack today. I’d have to sit next to Sawyer for a few hours, enveloped in his scent, knowing that he had rejected Lincoln and me.

Tears blurred my vision, and I gritted my teeth as I blinked them away. I blew out a slow breath.

Lincoln stirred behind me. His hand gripped my hip tighter, and he pressed his face into my hair. “You smell lovely.”

I fisted the blankets in my hand. “Thanks.”

He propped himself up so he was looking down at me and used his free hand to push strands of hair from my face. “Sawyer is looking out for us. He has always been the sensible one, and he always puts everyone else ahead of himself.”

I pursed my lips and nodded. The rational part of my brain knew that. “What’s going to happen to us?”

Lincoln kissed my cheek and pulled me closer. “I’m going to see about getting you more suppressants. Being around Sawyer and me could be pushing up your heat. Last night was damn near impossible. If Sawyer hadn’t walked away…” His hand went to my stomach. “I would love to put a pup or two in your belly, but not now. Not until it’s safe.”

My heat. Oh no. I’d heard that finding your mate could also spur on a heat.

He splayed his fingers over my abdomen. “When we’re together for the first time, I want it to be because you want us. Not because of an impending heat.”

My core ached at his words. I shifted my legs. The bathrobe rubbed against my skin. I wasn’t wearing anything but the robe. It would be so easy for him to flip me over and claim me. I shuddered and squeezed my thighs.

No!

I put my hand over the top of his. “We should get out of bed and get moving.”

He inhaled deeply and groaned. “Agreed. I know where some are. I’ll get them for you today. Any longer, and I don’t know what we’ll do.”

My body hummed. I bit my lip to suppress a whimper. Would it be such a bad thing to not get the suppressants?

Yes. Yes, it would.

I tossed the covers off me like they were on fire and sat up so fast I whacked my head on Lincoln’s chin. He grunted and cursed under his breath.

I spun around and covered my mouth with my hand. “Are you okay?”

He worked his jaw and then dabbed at his lip. “Yeah. I’ll be fine. We should be getting up anyway.”

I went to the bathroom and grabbed my still wet clothes from the top of the shower. There was nothing worse than trying to put on wet jeans. Ugh.

Lincoln knocked on the door and held out a plastic sack. “Hey, Sawyer brought these back. There are some dry clothes for you in here.”

I took the bag from him and slipped on the yoga pants and tee he’d gotten me. Then I did my best to comb my hair up into a messy bun. I stared at myself in the mirror. I looked like a train wreck.

My eyes were puffy, and I had dark bags under them. And I was definitely putting the messy into this bun.

Without a brush and some products, there wasn’t much I could do. I pinched my cheeks, giving myself a little color, and did one last double take before coming out of the bathroom.
