Lincoln was standing by the door. He gave me a small smile before he opened it and motioned me out first. “Sawyer is bringing the car around.”

“Did it finally stop raining?”

“Yeah, but there are all sorts of flash flood warnings still. We’ll be taking the long way around.”

“Perfect.” Not!

Lincoln grabbed my hand and spun me into him. He cupped my face with one hand, and I closed my eyes. “Don’t be mad at Sawyer. He’s trying to protect us. I know it hurts. It hurts metoo. The three of us belong together, but Sawyer is the noble one. He’ll protect us at any cost, even if it hurts us, too.”

He dropped his hand and looked away. “He’s right, too. My dad will kill us if he found out about our connection. He needs Sawyer as an heir. The two of us… We’re disposable.”

My fingers shook. I put my hand on my stomach and found a spot to stare at on the wall. I blinked back tears, unsure why I was reacting this way. It’s not like what he’d said was a secret.

Lincoln tucked his fingers under my chin and turned my head so I had to meet his gaze. “We will figure this out. I promise.”

Before the six months Alpha Dane had given me were up? I doubted it. He’d grown more powerful just these past few days.

“Good,” Sawyer said from behind me. “You’re both up. We need to hit the road.”

Lincoln’s brows dipped into a scowl. “What is it?”

I turned and saw the hard set of Sawyer’s jaw.

“I spoke to Dad. He thinks that the Delidos are circling back to our pack.”

“What?” I shook my head. “No. No way. Willa wanted to get as far away from there as possible.”

Sawyer shrugged. “It’s what he said. I don’t know if he’s paranoid or if there’s truth to it. But we got to go.”

Lincoln put his hand on the small of my back and gave me a gentle nudge forward. “Let’s go.”

I looked at Lincoln, then at Sawyer. “I mean, if they are, would it be such a bad thing?”

Sawyer scrubbed a hand over his face and turned on his heel, making a beeline for the door.

Lincoln bowed his head and whispered to me as we followed. “It would. You’ve only seen the inside of the pack house, Sloane. We have a few hundred men there still watching, guarding. The Delidos are a small group. They’d be slaughtered in minutes.”

Oh God. “I didn’t know you had that many men.”

“No one does. My dad keeps it a secret as best he can. You’d be surprised how many men have defected to him to save their lives. Or their family’s lives.”

I put my hand on my chest. “But if they defected, are they loyal?”

Lincoln ran his hand through his hair. “It’s hard to say. But they betrayed their alpha and pack. I wouldn’t trust them.”

My spirit sank, and I looked at the floor. He was right. Any wolf who betrayed their pack, an alpha they’d sworn their loyalty to, was not a wolf we wanted at our backs.

Sawyer muttered something under his breath. The lobby doors whooshed open as he approached, sending in a cool chill from outside.

I groaned and wrapped my arms around myself. The car was parked right out front. Lincoln opened the passenger door for me and motioned me in. I didn’t budge.

I blinked up at him. “Can I sit in the back?”

He frowned. “Are you sure?”

I bobbed my head up and down adamantly.

He reached around me and opened the back door. “Okay. Let me know if you want to switch spots. It can get cramped back there.”
