I’d wanted to make the run to the cave in the dark. We’d have Willa with us tomorrow night. She was going to slow us down, but I wasn’t going to leave her behind.

Willa had become like a sister to me. I was going to protect her.

I turned on my heel and made another lap around the small cave.

Where was Lincoln?

I yanked my hair out of my hair tie, worked it back into a messy bun, and clapped my hands against my outer thighs as I paced.

Back and forth. Back and forth.

I was going to die of anticipation if he didn’t get back here soon.

Of course I was nervous.

It was the first time I’d been truly alone since coming here. The Wolf Blood Pack hadn’t been my home for long, but I felt like I’d been here for years.

During that time, I’d never been truly alone with my thoughts.

“Sloane!”

I turned at the familiar voice. My heart skipped a beat.

Sawyer.

My mouth popped open. “What…what are you doing here?”

He raked a hand through his hair as his gaze darted around the cavern. “I came to have a few minutes to myself.” A small smile spread over his features. “Though I’m glad I’m not alone. Where’s Lincoln?”

“He went to get another bag for us. You didn’t see him?” I asked as my pulse sped up. I knew he’d been gone too long.

“No. But I’m sure he’s fine. He’s just being cautious. A lot of guys are out tonight, and he’s good at moving under the radar.” He frowned. “Another bag?”

I went to the book bag we’d brought earlier and picked it up. “It’s our bug-out bag.”

Sawyer scratched the back of his head. “Good. I wanted to talk to you both about that anyway. When do you leave?”

I sighed and set the bag back on the rocks, plopping down next to it. “Tomorrow night. Midnight, maybe a little later.”

“Good. Less prying eyes then. Most of the pack will be going with my dad.”

“Lincoln sent out a message trying to warn them. I hope it was received.” I slid my foot back and forth over the rocks.

“I hope so too. My father will leave no survivors.”

I shuddered and hugged myself.

Sawyer came to sit next to me, but I couldn’t help but notice the several feet he left between us. “Is Willa going with you?”

I met his gaze. “Yes. I’m not leaving her here.”

He lifted his hand like he wanted to reach out and touch me, but then he dropped it back to his lap. “And you shouldn’t. My dad will kill her for sure. I don’t know whose kid that is, but I can smell it’s not mine. It’s only a matter of time before he does, too.”

“Jacob Delido.” The name popped out before I could think about it. And I hadn’t thought that the mother took on the scent of the father while she was pregnant.

Sawyer lifted his brow in question, and I just shrugged. “They’ve known each other a long time. He’s her soulmate.”

“Was he one of the men my dad killed yesterday?” he asked, his voice quiet.
