“And who is going to watchyourback?” I blinked up at him through teary eyes.

My chest throbbed. The weight had come back and was pressing against it, making it almost impossible for me to breathe.

He closed his eyes and pulled me into his arms. “It’s going to be all right. We have to believe that. This is what we have to do, and I’ll sleep better knowing the two people I care most about in this world are safe. You and Lincoln have to go.”

Lincoln rubbed my back. “We’ve got this, Sloane. The three of us will be back together before we know it. Promise.”

He nuzzled the back of my neck.

I leaned into Lincoln as Sawyer peeled himself out of my embrace.

He tucked one finger under my chin and met my eyes. “I have to go before I’m missed. I’ll see you both soon.” He looked from Lincoln to me, then back again. “Do me a favor and check on Willa tomorrow. She’s still pretty distraught. I wouldn’t tell her about your plans until it’s time to go. Just in case you need to make changes.”

He trailed his finger across my chin and then let his hand fall to his side. He looked at Lincoln, and I felt him nod behind me.

Then Sawyer turned on his heel and left.

A hollow, aching feeling filled my belly. What if I never saw him again?

Twenty-One

I gripped Lincoln’s handas we stood at the top of the steps. Sawyer gave us one last glance before he got into the passenger seat of the Aston Martin and slammed the door shut.

Alpha Dane gave us both an appraising look. His eyes narrowed at Lincoln. “Don’t screw this up. I’m trusting you with the pack.”

Lincoln let go of my hand and trotted down the stairs, exuberating a confidence I wish I had.

He stood toe-to-toe with his dad. “I won’t.”

His dad narrowed his eyes. I shifted my feet and clasped my hands in front of me. The alpha must have seen my movement because his gaze shot to me.

I swallowed and looked at the ground. A show of submission. His eyes stayed on me, watching. I could feel him scrutinizing me.

Fear swirled through me. It was coming from my mates. It festered and made me on edge.

I blinked rapidly.Don’t look up, Sloane!

Lincoln cleared his throat. “Do you have any specific tasks for me in your absence?”

Alpha Dane’s gaze finally darted off me. I let out a long breath, and the nauseating fear dissipated.

“Just keep everyone in check. Watch the women. I don’t trust them. Especially the girl.”

Lincoln bowed his head. “I’ll check on her daily.”

“See to it you do.” Alpha Dane sneered at me before turning on his heel and going to the car.

He shot one last look at Lincoln and me before he climbed into the car.

I put my hands together, clasping them tightly. Tears burned my eyes as the car revved to life. It jumped forward and sped down the drive, throwing a spray of gravel in its wake.

A few pebbles flew toward Lincoln, but he stayed rooted in his spot and didn’t move. The rest of the cars peeled out after the alpha, one by one flying down the drive like we were at the Indy 500.

Lincoln didn’t move until the last car’s taillights disappeared from sight. Then he turned to the men who had been left behind. “I want a perimeter search. Let me know if you find anything out of the ordinary.”

He stomped past them and took the stairs two at a time. He grasped my elbow, tugged me toward the house, and didn’t let go until we’d made our way upstairs.

We didn’t stop in his room. Instead, we went straight to Willa and Sawyer’s.
