I turned to him and lifted my brow. Was I supposed to tell her everything now? It was still early.

He gave me a slight shake of his head. “I want you to check on the prisoner. Make sure she has eaten breakfast. Stay in there until I return for you.”

I opened my mouth, but before I could respond, he twisted the knob and opened the door.

My mouth popped open at his brashness, but I didn’t question it. A group of enforcers were making their way down the hall. I let him guide me inside and looked back as the door shut and he locked me in.

What was that all about? I’d ask later. Once we were alone. I trusted him. I was sure he had a good reason.

I drew in a deep breath and gagged. That smell. It was death. I took a step toward the bed.

Willa.

But something to the right on the bench that looked out the window drew my eye. I screamed and scrambled backwards so fast I almost fell on my ass. My butt hit the edge of the desk, knocking a few things over.

On the bench by the window were two severed heads. Willa’s mother and father.

My stomach rolled as bile crept up my throat.

“Sloane?” The blankets ruffled, and Willa’s head popped out from under the comforter. She blinked at me through red-rimmed eyes. Tear tracks stained her face.

I gaped at her and then at the severed heads. She let out a sob. I marched across the room, ripped the blanket off the bed, and darted across the room, throwing the blanket over the top of their heads.

She drew her knees to her chest and sobbed uncontrollably. “This is all my fault. I killed them.”

I stared at the blanket covering her parents for a long moment before turning back to her.

The sheets had slid down her body to reveal the bandage on her leg. Deep red streaks and pus oozed away from under the gauze, and fresh blood coated it.

“Oh, Willa.” I ran back to her and sat, drawing her into my arms.

“Alpha Dane brought them here this morning. He delivered them with my breakfast.” She sobbed.

I ran my hand up and down her back, darting my gaze back to the blanket. I could still see the shape of their heads through the blanket.

I’d have Lincoln remove them as soon as possible.

My belly flipped again. That asshole. He’d brought her parents’ heads in here and served them up like they were a prized possession to decorate with.

“Did Sawyer know about this?” He couldn’t have. There was no way he would have let them sit in here, taunting her like that.

Willa burrowed her face into my shoulder. “No. He doesn’t. Alpha brought them after Sawyer left me for the morning. He wanted to make sure I behaved while they were gone.”

I smoothed my hand through her hair and held her tighter. “I’m so sorry, Willa.”

My heart thumped painfully in my chest. Those could easily be my parents. I worried my bottom lip. Were Lincoln and I making the right call tonight? Would Willa still want to leave? I wouldn’t blame her if she didn’t, but I couldn’t let her stay, either.

She cried harder, her whole body trembling. “I should have just stayed like you told me. This is my fault. I killed them, Sloane.”

I pulled back and gripped her cheeks with my palms. “No. You didn’t do this. Alpha Dane is a madman. He did this because he is a sick, sick man.”

Willa frowned and met my gaze. Her face morphed into a hard mask. “I’m going to kill him for everything he’s done to me, Sloane.” She gritted her teeth.

“I’ll help you.” The words came out before I could stop them. I drew in a deep breath and nodded at her. I meant those words with every fiber of my being.

“You’re working with Sawyer and Lincoln, aren’t you?” She pushed her hair behind her ear.

“We don’t have a full plan yet, but yes.”
