His voice was velvety and deep and made me even hotter.

I licked my lips and took a step toward him when I ought to be backpedaling away.

What was wrong with me?

I drew in deep gasps through my mouth, trying not to take more of his scent in. The way I was reacting to him… It was like he was my… No. No! Not possible!

Lincoln strode toward me and stopped just a few feet away.

My knees went weak. He was about a foot taller than me and ripped more than I realized now that he was close. He was a freaking god.

He held out a hand. “Lincoln.”

I blinked and stared down at his hand. Then slowly lifted mine and put it in his. His touch was electric. Energy surged through us, sending tingles up my arm and through my body.

He grunted and jerked back. His eyes widened, and his brows dipped into a scowl. “That can’t be.”

Oh boy. He felt it too. I put my hand over my mouth.

We were mates. I’d imprinted on him.

Lincoln scrubbed a hand over his face. “This changes nothing.”

I wasn’t sure if he was talking to me or himself. It didn’t matter.

“You’re right. It doesn’t.” I shook my head and took a step back. “Nothing can change the fact that I am a prisoner here.” My voice rose as anger took hold like a vise.

I clenched my hands at my sides. My life was gone. I’d never see my family again. Ricky. Poor Ricky. He was my age. A good man. He was dead.

Lincoln looked at the floor. “You are not my prisoner.”

“No?”

His attention snapped up to me. “Sloane. It’s…it’s Sloane, right?”

I swallowed and nodded. He was much more reserved than his father. Maybe even a little unsure of himself.

“I never intend to touch you. Not unless you want me to.”

Heat charged up my face and over my ears at his words. There was a part of me thatdidwant him to touch me, to take me into that very large bed and let him have his way with me.

“No!” It came out a raw shriek, startling even me.

Lincoln jumped at my outburst and took another step back. “Right.” His brows dipped together, and he rubbed the back of his neck. “Right. Right. Of course.”

I’d hurt his feelings.

Shame washed over me at the realization. Tears burned my eyes, and I blinked them away. My emotions were all over the place. I needed to figure this out. After meeting Alpha Dane, I never imagined that Lincoln would be my soulmate.

What were the odds?

If he was my mate, my soulmate, maybe he wasn’t that bad. Luna wouldn’t mate me to a tyrant or a rapist, right?

Lincoln met my eyes, a frown still prominent on his features. “I know what my dad expects of us. I won’t touch you. For what it is worth, you won’t be a prisoner in my room.”

I wrapped my arms around myself as I eyed him. He held my gaze, making me think that he wasn’t trying to deceive me and that he was being genuine. What reason would he have to lie anyway?

On second thought, his dad was an evil bastard. Maybe they got off on being cruel.
