“So,” Dom says, “there’s a guy in town who owes me a favor.”

“Don’t theyallowe you favors?”

He smiles, “Yeah, but this is for a real-estate deal. It was Bret’s idea. What do you think about setting up a practice in town? Setting up shop here?”

Sigh, “You know, I was thinking about that very same thing just now in fact, but it doesn’t work that way. You can only practice medicine on your own once you’ve done your residency.”

“That hasn’t stopped you from working your magic withus.”

“Those were emergencies, Dom. You said yourself, the hospital is too far away. Also, I doubt anyone in the club is going to sue me for malpractice if I get some stitches wrong. If I start prescribing medication and stuff like that, things will start to get complicated. I can fix a booboo as good as the next person, but there are legal and ethical things to consider as well.”

He laughs, “Booboo. I think they were more than that, Lara. Listen,” he takes my hand. “People around here aren’t going to sue you either. There’s no one around for miles and we need someone with your skills. We wouldn’t really even be charging people for your services. The club will take care of you financially. Your practice can be a free clinic. It would be a way to give back to the community.”

“Okay,” I smile. “It’s something to think about I guess. It’s still illegal, but isn’t everything we do?”

“To some extent.”

“Okay,” I pinch his thigh. “Let me sleep on it.”

“Fair enough,” he smiles, “go enjoy your party.”

“See you later?” I give him a hug.

“If you don’t have any other plans,” he winks.

I go back to join everybody at our table and Chase asks, “What was that about?”

I use a snooty voice and say, “It would seem that our dear Bret here has floated a rather interesting proposition concerning my continued residence in Reaper territory…which, incidentally, precludes me from actuallydoingmyresidency.”

Bret smiles, “It’s handy having a doctor around.”

“It’s also illegal to practice medicine until you’ve gotten a licenseafterdoing residency.”

Nick says, “We’re an MC, everything wedois illegal!”

“I know,” I say, “I said the same thing!”

Cassidy adds, “Well, I guess there’s no reason not to think about it then. I mean, consider it.I’dlove to have you around. Maybe I could be your assistant?”

“Hmm. Food for thought.” Crap! I forgot my shot at the bar! “Be right back,” I get up and run back to Stacey.

She smiles and says, “I thought you forgot about me!”

“Never! And, you might as well have Dom’s too!” I laugh to myself! I’ve got to pace myself…I’m a celebrator…I might be up till dawn!

The moment I pick up the shot glass I hear a chair fall over and two more scrape the floor. “DON’T FUCKING MOVE!” It’s Chase’s voice.

I turn and see Rick, Bret, Chase and Nick on their feet with their guns in their hands.

I immediately fall into an alert crouch and look at where they’re aiming. It’s hard to focus with the gasping, shouting and clattering from bottles and tables and chairs shifting.

My eyes dart every which way till I see a scruffy looking Latino guy dressed in dirty blue jeans, a flannel shirt and a brown jacket. He slowly interlaces his fingers behind his head and drops down to his knees.

Tears are streaming down his face.

What the hell is going on?

Dom steps toward the guy with his gun drawn and aimed. When he’s too close to miss, he calls out, “Bret, keep an eye on the girls.” Then he looks at me and meets my stare…something big is happening. “The rest of you with me. Chase!”
