I still have the big goofy smile on my face as I aim for the Yamaha, when Dom says, “Nope, not that one.”

He pulls out a set of keys from his pocket and pushes the button on a fob. The garage door rolls up.

Inside is a brand-new, shiny, PINK, Harley-Davidson! “Oh my GOD! Are you serious?!” The smile on my face gets even bigger!

“Yup,” Dom says. “She all yours. Everybody chipped in!”

“You guys!” I don’t know what else to do, so I just start jumping up and down on the spot! Then I give everyone a second round of hugs!

I’m supposed to start riding, but I get lost in thought standing there and taking in just how beautiful my new steed is! It’s this year’sFat-Boy.One of the most iconic Harley’s ever!

Nick gently shakes me with a laugh, “Come on, you can ogle it later. Everyone is waiting.”

I give him a nod and I’m sure my face is going to start hurting from all the smiling.

I mount up and key the engine. She growls like a beast! Wow!

I head up to the front, while everyone starts up. The rumble of so many engines shakes the earth.

I take a moment to soak things in. Wow! Just…WOW!

I give the Reapers the signal…and we ride!

***

Incredible!

That’s the only word I can use to describe it! Roaring through town with your family at your back, being greeted by waves and smiles, stopping to make small talk with the locals…oh, and of course—everyone admiring my sparkly new wheels and congratulating me on getting patched!

Seriously, better thananybirthday EVER!

The only weird thing was everyone asking me if I was going to be staying…and I honestly didn’t have an answer for them. I’m supposed to be leaving to go do my residency.

You can’t practice medicine if you don’t do your residency—it’s the law!

And for good reason. Knowing stuff from books and modest practical application isn’t the same as shadowing physicians in the thick of a trauma ward.

Residency isn’t easy either. Fifty percent of people end up quitting! Most of them from sleep deprivation! 24hr shifts arenormal!

It’s grueling.

And if I’m being real about things, being a doctor isn’t what it used to be fifty years ago. Back then, it was an honor, a privilege and you made truckloads of money.

These days, it’s either your calling in life or you’re just wasting your time. You’ll make a good salary, sure, but there so many doctors out there, some of them can’t even get the jobs they want!

There’s been adoctor boomin the last few decades. I suppose most of it comes from parents who force their children into the profession.

I chose it on my own.

If it wasn’t this, I would have become a vet.

We really need to get a dog here!

He can ride with me on my awesome new bike!

When we’re all sitting at the bar—Me, Nick, Cassidy, Chase, Rick and Bret—enjoying theafter-ridedrinks, Dom comes to me and says, “Got a sec?”

“Sure,” I stand and excuse myself, then follow him over to the bar counter. Stacey puts down two new beers as soon as we get there and I give her a sign to put down three shots too!
