He puts me behind it with a wink and then everybody starts chanting “SPEECH, SPEECH, SPEECH!”

Jeez, there’s a mic and everything!

Tap, tap, okay it’s working.

“Thanks so much to all of you for coming out today!”

There’re more cheers! Gosh, I’m so nervous!

“This is such a huge honor. It’s high time this community had some quality medical care closer than forty-five minutes away. I want to thank our Mayor and Sheriff Paul Wilson for giving the go-ahead on this venture of ours.”

There’re some cheers for Paul when I gesture to him. He gives everyone a big smile and a wave.

“I want to thank Mr. Schiavone ofTony’s auto and sparesfor being so generous and leasing us the property for free.”

I point him out and the crowd cheers again.

“I want to thank the guys in my MC, The Twisted Reapers, for convincing me to do this.” I don’t plan to say the following, but it slips out. “It’s a great thing when someoneknowswhat they want to do with their life. It’s something else entirely when you’re given something youknowyouhaveto do. It’s a calling unlike any other. Thank you,” I look at Dom, Nick, Bret and finally…Chase. “Thank you for showing me that.”

There’s a huge round of applause. Dom hands me a gigantic, theatrical pair of scissors, but I’m not going to do this alone, I call up every member of the MC to stand with me in front of the two-pane glass door that has the words—Attending Physician: Lara Kairn, MD—stenciled on it.

We all make sure we’re touching for good luck…then I cut the big red bow in front of us while a bazillion flashes burn our retinas!

There’s more applause, but I remember to scoot over to the mic again and say, “By the way, folks, we’re only for day to day stuff and emergencies. We’re not licensed so—”

Paul scooches next to me and says, “So, what I say goes, because I’m the Mayor of this town. We promise to provide you with the best care we can.”

“Okay,” I say into the mic. “What he said!”

Epilogue

Lara

It’s been two weeks and things are going really, really great! There are three rooms for patient examinations, a nice large waiting room, a reception area, a little kitchen and two offices for consultations.

We even have a fully stocked dispensary!

I asked Dom how he managed to pull that off, but all he told me was that he knows a guy who owed him a favor. In fact, that favor will be ongoing because, every month, all I have to do is tell him what meds we need and his guy will make it happen.

In time, if the town grows a little bit, we might even take on more help than just my secretary.

Guess who I ended up hiring? Denise! Yeah, the waitress from the diner. She applied for the job and turns out she’s much better suited to clerical work than waitressing.

We do walk-ins of course, but I much prefer it when people make appointments so they don’t end up waiting too long. We were pretty busy the first nine days, but now we seemed to have settled into a rhythm.

Which is why…when I see that I have nothing on the books today…I tell Denise to go home.

Today…I’m gonna have me some fun!

I’ve turned one of the exam rooms into a little treat for myself. I’ve used all the dividers available to create four booths—each has three panels with a curtain in the back.

The front has an adjust access panel so I’ve adjusted each one to crotch height!

They’re also all on wheels and I’ve positioned each one at ninety-degrees to the next so there’s a cube’s worth of space for me in the center.

I’m going to call it my SEX cube! It’s brand new so, patent pending!

I hear a buzz from reception. It’s time!
