This MC is about freedom. Freedom from the shackles imposed by a system that is unjust, imperfect and corrupt.

This MC…allows Lara Kairn to be a part of the system we despise so much…and she does it without so much as athank you.

I look at the young woman in front of me…she has so much hate inside of her for us, it makes me feel hollow.

I turn to the guys, “Give us the room, fellas. Wait outside.”

They all nod, step out and close the door. What I’m about to tell Lara doesn’t have to be public knowledge. I’m not going to embarrass her.

When I’m sure no one can hear us, I turn to address her, “So, let me get this straight, you think you’re going to give my own money back to me…and then you’ll be able to walk out of here?”

“What the hell are you talking about?” she stares at me so defiantly, I can almost see her brother in there somewhere. “My money ismy money!I’ve never taken a cent from you!”

“Uh uh, princess.Yourmoney ismymoney, unless you’ve been waitressing on the side or you’ve taken some other job that I don’t know about.”

Now she looks scared, “That money is the money that Luke was sending to me. He arranged it with a lawyer or something.”

I raise my brow at her, “Luke’s been gone for two years,” hoping she’s smart enough to figure it out without me having to draw her a map.

Her eyes go wide, “It’s got to be life insurance or something like that. An investment maybe?”

“Don’t be so naïve. You think brokers are going door to door stopping at every outlaw motorcycle gang in America and trying to sign us up? We’re bad business. You can’t be this stupid Lara.”

She sits down on the bed…looking a little shell-shocked.

She whispers, “I guess, maybe deep down I always suspected, I just didn’t want to believe it.”

I give her a moment to process.

She gives me a—deer in the headlights—look. Her bottom lip trembles, “I want to go home.”

I don’t buy it for a second, “Don’t try to play me Lara, I’ve known you since you were a kid and you’re not one anymore. This act,” I point at her. “It’s not going to work.”

She jumps up—the soft, vulnerable child replaced by an angry, confident woman, “What the fuck do you want from me then?!”

“I’ve told you that already. You’re going to stay here for your holidays and you’re going to learn some respect. It’s that simple. You don’t get to take my money, run off to play doctor for a bunch of people who don’t even know you, become a millionaire and disrespect the people who gave you that opportunity.”

“That spare room is like shit! Even an animal shouldn’t stay in there!”

“Prospects sleep in a cot in the garage and have no privacy. Count yourself lucky.”

“I’m not a prospect!”

“Yes, you are!”

“Well I’m a girl and I’m not fucking staying in there! There are spiders in there riding sidesaddle on other spiders who’re bigger than them! I’m not fucking staying in there!”

I can’t help myself.I laugh.

Lara pokes me in the chest, “What?”

I fight down the laughter and go to the door, open it and find my three guys still waiting for me. “Bret.”

“Yeah?”

Lara joins me at the door and I say, “Set up the princess here in the VP’s room.” I look at her and ask, “I trust that will be more to your liking, Miss?”

“We’ll see,” she says, flicking a lock of her brown hair off her shoulder.
