I can’t imagine what we’d have ended up doing if she hadn’t interrupted us. I’d have probably lost my virginity in the back of the van!

When I am finally able to stop my vagina from dominating my train of thought…I consider my options on how best to shop, when I have to feed a family of fiveevery day, andentertain a party of fifteen every Sunday…grocery shopping would clearly become a weekly duty.

There’s only one standalone freezer at the clubhouse and there’s no way I’d be able to store more than seven days’ worth of food.

I’d been cooking for me and Luke for years so I’m quite capable in the kitchen—evenif I do say so myself.

For dinner I grill two chickens, bake two big loaves of garlic bread and prepare a gigantic, fluffy, leafy salad with cherry tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, onion and olives—I even add some feta.

It’s a well-balanced meal.

Cassidy is here when Nick and I get back, so she joins us for dinner. She tried calling me, but my phone has been confiscated—so she took a chance and just showed up.

I receive unbridled praise from her, Dom, Bret and Nick…then a grudging, grunted acknowledgement from Chase.

Nick shoots me a funny look across the table from time to time and then acts like he’s hiding from Cassidy.

It makes me laugh, and the best explanation I can offer Cassidy when she asks what was so funny is—something happened while we were shopping today.

“What?”

“Oh, just some crazy old lady stalking us when we were looking for sheets.” And then the two of us start laughing again.

I notice that Bret doesn’t seem very amused by any of it and even seems to be a little uncomfortable.

Once dinner is done and everyone helps clean up, Nick says he’ll be heading home with Cassidy—he shares a little place with her.

Chase also decides to go back to his own place.

Dom goes off to God knows where which leaves Bret and I alone in the clubhouse. He has his own place too, but Dom had tasked him with help me set up my new room.

He’d vacuumed it for me while I was out shopping with Nick.

It’s a nice room. There’s an adjoining bathroom with a nice shower. It’s spacious and there’s even a writing desk. The queen bed is fairly new and still firm.

I try to make conversation but Bret, is being strangely quiet, so I have to ask, “Is everything okay?”

“Sure,” he smiles politely.

I flap out one of the new sheets and he catches one end from the other side of the bed. We start tucking it under the mattress. “You’ve hardly spoke to me all day.”

He gives me another tired smile, “Well, I tried to talk to you this morning, but you didn’t seem to remember what happened last night.”

“Remember what?” This is getting stupid now. “If you don’t tell me, I nevergoingto remember.”

“It doesn’t matter,” he rips open the duvet cover, then starts turning it inside out.

I laugh, more out of frustration than anything else, “If it doesn’t matter, why do you keep bringing it up?”

“Pick up the inside part for the duvet and hand me the two corners.”

I do as he asks and he makes short work of filling it.

He flaps it out and settles it perfectly. Then we start on pulling on the pillow cases.

“Bret, if I did something to offend you or anything like that, I’d really like to know. I feel like you’re being weird with me.”I was even hoping that tonight would be the night…and now he’s acting like I called his favorite movie a piece of crap.

He looks a little frustrated, “It’s fine, really, Lara. You’re with Nick. That’s cool. I mean we’re friends so I guess if it had to be anybody, I’m glad it’s him.”
