Dominic

Fucking Malcolm Cortez.Only three people know the truth about what happened to Luke Kairn.

Chase is one.

I’m going to see the third.

When I leave the clubhouse, I haul ass so I can get a good head start and keep ahead of the pack. I get to town in record time.

The building that houses law and governance in the town ofMyersis all in one double story building that looks like a house on the prairie.

The two offices it contains belong to the same man, because the Sheriff is also the Mayor.

Yeah…that’s how small this town is.

He’s only got two deputies and they’re both parked out front, leaning against their vehicles.

I roar up to them, park and switch of. They’re both already tipping their hats when I use my kickstand and dismount.

“Boys,” I nod to Kyle and Tom.

“Dom,” Kyle greets me from behind his Ray-ban Aviators.

“He in there?”

“Yup.”

I take the steps two at a time, and open the wooden front door.

Inside is far from a stately affair. Martha, the gray-haired receptionist who’s been here since forever is behind her desk like always, there’s a pot coffee and some bagels on a table and that’s it.

“He’s waiting for you, Dom,” she nods her head. “Go on through.”

“Martha,” I nod.

I open the door to my right and enter a simple office. There’s a desk, two chairs on my side, one on his, some bookshelves, cabinets and a tray of booze on top of the chest of drawers behind Mayor/Sheriff Paul Wilson.

He’s fifty-two and going gray but in great shape, and dressed in a brown sheriff’s uniform. There’s more to do as the sheriff than the mayor.

“I got the call,” he says. “Been expecting you.”

I watch him pour two glasses before he turns around. He puts one on my side of the desk before he sits down. I sit down as well and take a sip of the scotch. “I’m glad he didn’t get shanked in there. Any idea where he’s headed?”

“No idea.”

“He’s going to come back. He’s going to need money. Chances are that someone over in Becker owes him something. Even if they don’t, they are people he can lean on.”

“Yup,” Paul takes a sip. “Fresh out of the can, he’s going to need to get some cashsomewhere.”

I take a breath before I ask for the big favor, “I want him, Paul. It should be me that puts him down. That’s why I didn’t let anyone touch him in there.”

“I know,” he stands and walks over to the window, looking out at a whole lot of nothing. “You know I’ve got no problem with that. That’s why I didn’t tell the state police that he was wanted for murder two years ago when they picked him up on that bullshit illegal firearms charge. Heck, I’ll even tell the boys to keep an eye. He comes through here, he’s yours. I’m not going to fight you on that.”

“But?”

“But nothing. You’ve done right by me and by this town. It’s the least I can do. That piece of shit deserves a lot worse. I figure the situation calls for a little frontier justice. Just keep it outside of Myers.”

“Thank you,” I down what’s left of the scotch. “You’re a good friend, Paul.” I stand…and before I know it, my thoughts run away with me.
