“There’s something else, isn’t there?” I see Paul giving me a knowing look.

“There is,” I nod. “Luke Kairn’s sister is staying with us. She’s going to be here for another two months. I’m not sure if I should tell her.”

“Don’t. I can’t see what good would come from it. Medical school, wasn’t it?”

“Yeah.”

“She’s got her whole life in front of her, Dom.”

“Maybe you’re right, maybe…but it’s the truth. Maybe she deserves to know.”

He chuckles mirthlessly. “Deserveain’t got nothing to do with it. You get what you get. The truth is whatever you tell that young lady.”

Maybe.I put my hand out, “Thanks, Paul.”

He shakes my hand and nods.

I take my leave, waving to Martha, then Kyle and Tom on the way out.

I don’t go back to the clubhouse though, I need to think. A ride on my own will help me do that.

I go two hours to the coast, ride along it for another hour and then do another two hours back to home base.

By the time I’m back at the clubhouse, I know what my next move is.

As soon as I park, I call Matt, Rick and Phil. Bret and Nick are still here—because their bikes are.I haven’t seen Chase all day, but that’s a good thing. He doesn’t need to come along on this ride.

I have no fucking clue what Chase is up to…but I’ll get to that later.

Maybe I’ve been too hard on him in the last couple of years, but that’s no excuse for him burying himself inside a bottle.

The problem I’ve got right now is that we’ve got a shipment coming through in a couple of weeks and I’ve got a loose cannon blowing into town.

I need some assurances…and I’m going to get them.

I go into the front bar and that’s where I find Bret, Nick, Lara and a fewhang-arounds.Sunday nights are not our busiest.

We’ve got a new bar-lady. I’d briefly considered making Lara do it, but that would’ve been a step too far. She already does more than enough around here.

Stacey is doing great, she’s twenty-five, blonde and gets along well with both the members and the local barflies.

She sees me coming and opens a beer before sliding it down the counter. I catch it and nod my thanks, then make eye contact with Bret and call him over to the counter.

He comes up to me on the double, “What’s up?”

“We’re going on a trip south. You, me, Matt, Rick and Phil.”

“Alright,” Bret looks at me expecting more information.

“We need a show of force for the Horde. Not so much that it looks like we’re coming to stir up trouble, but big enough to show we’re serious.”

“What’s this about, Dom?”

Not yet…Maybe this is why Chase drinks—keeping the secret. It isolates you…but being the president isolates you anyway. Chase has to do this but carries no authority.

“Dom?”

“Listen, this is another one of those things where you’re just going to have to trust me. When the time is right…if it ever is…I’ll tell you. For now, I can tell you this is about club business and I need your help. Keep the rest of the guys in line for me alright?”
