“Sure.”I have to give it to Bret…he’s a loyal soldier.“I’ve got you, Dom.”

“Good, have everyon come armed, not to the teeth, but to defend ourselves. Also sleeping bags and some provisions. We’ll sleep under the stars tonight. Might as well do something cool while we’re out there.”

“Cool,” Bret smiles and goes back to their table. I see him say goodbye and then leave the bar.

I go over to them and tell Nick, “Stay here with Lara tonight. Me and some of the boys are taking a business trip, we’ll be back in the morning.’

“Okay,” Nick nods to me. “Sure, Bret just told me.”

I down my beer and squeeze Lara’s shoulder, “See you in the morning.”

She gives me one of her heartwarming smiles and it makes me feel like a liar.

That’s how I feel as I make my way to the door.I’ve been lying to everyone.

I go over to the clubhouse to pack my gear.

In my room, a sawed-off shotgun sits mounted on the wall. It was a birthday present from the guys three years ago. It’s not the most legal weapon in the world.

It’s devastating at close range and that’s why they’re banned. It’s a good thing Luke had a retired ATF agent in his pocket and got me a legit license for it.

That’s how we do business—favors.

Luke once tuned up a bunch of meth-heads and saved that agent’s daughter from pimping herself out for the next hit. He did it for nothing…simply because it was right.

Luke Kairn…he was one of the best of us.

I take the shotgun, some shells, my bedroll and my Beretta. The clothes I’m wearing are fine till tomorrow.

That’s how biker’s roll—Fresh air washes us.

By the time I get outside to stow my supplies, the guys are packed and waiting for me. Rick, Phil and Matt are good soldiers too. They don’t ask questions.

It’s accepted that I don’t have to tell everybody everything. That’s how an MC does business. We all enjoy the fruits of our labors, but the guy at the top is the one who’s liable.

Only I know the big secrets. If we ever get jammed up, the only thing my guys are doing is riding with me, they’re not accomplices, they can’t talk about something they genuinely aren’t aware of and they’re not guilty of anything.

But…if shit goes down, they’ll be right there to back my play.

“Alright, men. South.”

We all start up…rev our engines…then roar into the distance.

Chapter Ten

Nick

Dom and his clandestine trips.

Oh well…at least I get to spend time with Lara…but this might end up being a little awkward as we haven’t really spent much time to together sinceSheet Street.

Well…not alone anyways. We’ve always been with other people in a group.

And she’s definitely been doing something with Bret. They try to hide it but it’s plain to see. I guess he was the logical choice. They have history and the fact that he was Luke’s best friend gives them a bond I’ll never have with her.

She takes a sip through her straw, “They’re really going to make this trip at night?” I wishIwas that straw. Something about the way she uses her tongue gets me hard every time.

“Yeah, we do stuff like that all the time. It’s safer than going alone. The guy in front knows he’s responsible for everyone behind him so it forces you to pay attention.”
