After shaking goodbye with Nico, I turn to my guys. They don’t seem happy that I’m leaving Chase.

“Trust me, he’s had this coming. It’s for his own good.”

They all give me looks like—really? You don’t think this is too much?

“Fellas, understanding is not a prerequisite for compliance. Trust me, he needs this. Now, let’s go. We won’t be far if we have to come back. We’ll sleep atSampson Pass.”

Chapter Twelve

Lara

I don’t know whether to find Nick’s behavior funny or annoying! We’ve sat with Cassidy and Stacey for the whole night and he’s acting like what happened…didn’t happen.

He hasn’t tried to make a move or even address the fact that he asked Cassidy’s permission todateme.

Three weeks ago, he couldn’t keep his hands off me!

He’s right though, there’s nothing to do in Myers. He’d never beableto take me on a date.

I thought it was quite charming he asked for permission.

I swear, I actually felt my pussy turn on at the thought of him and I…but since then, he’s just been sitting here, listening to the girls talk…and sipping his beer.

He’s irritating me!

“Right,” Cassidy pushes her empty bottle across the counter. “I better get home or I won’t be able to wake up for work tomorrow.”

She works at one of the two ladies’ boutiques in town. I’ve visited her there a few times.

It’s not a bad store.

I stand with her when she gets up and give her a hug, “Should probably turn in myself. I need to come see you about some shoes. My sneakers are getting destroyed on all the rough terrain. I need something a little sturdy.”

“Sure, we’ve got some nice hiking boots that’ll work better.” Cassidy laughs, “They’re not flying off the shelves or anything, but I’ll keep a size-six for you.”

I laugh too, “Thanks!”

She pats Nick on the shoulder, waves to Stacey and makes her way out of the bar.

When she’s gone, Nick says, “Jesus! I thought she’dneverleave!”

I turn to him laughing, “God! Is that why you were being so coy?”

“Hey, it’s one thing to get her blessing, but I wasn’t about to suck on your neck in front of her!”

“Oh? Is that what you would’ve done.”

“Damn right!” He smiles and signals Stacey. “How about a last round?”

“Sure,” Stacey says. “Tequilas too?”

“Why not,” I say. “And for yourself. It seems we have a reason to celebrate.”

“What’s that?”

“Nick isn’t shy anymore,” I expose my neck and offer it to him.

He laughs, picks up the salt shaker, sprinkles some on me and licks it off. I wriggle from the sensation.
