But, the fact is, you don’t make a pass at your best friend’s sister. Especially when you grow up together. That’s a line you just don’t cross.

When she was sixteen, I was twenty-one. At eighteen, I was twenty-three, and then she went off to medical school.

The last time I saw her was when she came home for Luke’s funeral. We all had other things on our minds.

Today might not be such a different story though. She’s still got Luke on her mind.

I guess this place is full of bad memories for her. This is the first time she’s been here since the wake.

The problem is there aren’t that many places to get a drink in this town…and this is the one we all go to.

Maybe I should make a toast for Luke. It might help Lara look at this bar with a good memory next time instead of a sad one.

I signal Carla to refill the shots. We’ve already had quite a few, but one more won’t hurt.

Most of the guys in the club drink like this every night, so we can all hold our liquor.

Although…looking over at Chase, I’m starting to wonder. He’s really been knocking them back tonight. The way he’s staring…it’s like he’s thinking about murder.

I wonder what’s up with him?

He’s all by himself too…

I see Phil, Charlie, Dixon and Pete sitting at a table in one corner.

Matt, Rick, Casey and Fletch are in another.

They’re all chatting and hanging out like normal. There are some other patrons who’re associates of the club. We call themhang-arounds.There are about nine of them.

Chase is the only one acting creepy.

Oh well.

Carla pours the shots and I knock twice on the table before raising my glass. “It’s been a little over two years now. Here’s to Luke Kairn. There’s never been one like him and there never will be again. He was a brother to his club, to all of us, and a brother to the most amazing younger sister there ever was. She’s going to be a doctor. We love you Lara. I know that Luke is resting in peace knowing who you’ve become.”

I look at Lara and there are tears in her eyes but she’s also smiling.

“To Luke Kairn.”

Cassidy, Lara, Carla and every patch member in the bar echoes, “Luke Kairn!” We down our shots.

Lara comes around Cassidy and gives me a hug, “Thank you for that.”

“I meant it,” I say…and accidentally kiss her neck during the hug.Probably should’ve waited for better timing. But she pulls away with a smile and goes back to her stool.

Whew!

Lukewasmy brother. I shouldn’t be thinking the things I’m thinking.

“Luke was a fucking asshole!” It’s Chase. I watch him get to his feet unsteadily across the bar.

Oh…shit.He’s drunk.

Here’s how things work in an OMC. The ‘O’ is for outlaw. It’s not because we’re outlaws or criminals specifically—even though we are—the ‘O’ is because we’re not sanctioned by theAmerican Motorcyclist Association.

With us—Only the president can discipline a patch member. I can’t stop Chase from being an asshole right now. I’m not his close friend and I’m not the VP or the president…I’m equal to him in rank.

When something like this happens—and it doesn’t happen often, since we’re supposed to be fucking grownups—then we’ve got to call Dom.
