“You’re not going to eat?”

She takes a knife and cuts her burger down the middle. “Tell me a good story and you can have this half.”

I take the half and put it on my plate in advance, then give her a smile. “Where would you like me to start?”

“The beginning isalwaysmy favorite place.”

“Well, I wasn’t there when he was born so I’ll take you back as far as I know.”

“Good enough,” Lara takes a bite.

“This is a Goddamn good burger, by the way.”

“It’s a treat. No more than once a month,” she licks some sauce off her finger…the way she does it makes me wish I was ten years younger. “Go on?”

Smart, young, sexy, capable…knows how to cook…how to be a doctor. By anyone’s account—the perfect woman.I never had one of my own.

“Dom!”

“Yeah?”

“Talk!”

“Right, so I met Chase’s old man when I was fresh out of the military. It was a little difficult adjusting to life back home and the club seemed to make sense to me at the time.”

“Is this story aboutyouorhim?”

I laugh, “A little of both, I’m applying context.”

She gestures for me to go on, but we’re interrupted by a*ding*from behind me. “That’s the chips. I’m trying out the air-fryer. Be right back.”

I nod.

A minute later she returns with golden brown fries. They’re hot and crispy on the outside…softy and mushy on the inside. The truffle thing tastes good.

I give her my—well done—face.

“I know! Thanks! You can do almost anything with an air-fryer! I’ve been thinking about getting one for a while.”

“Well this one stays here. If you leave, I’ll get you a going away present.”

“If?”

“A story for another time.”

“Indeed,” she shoots her brow. “Back to Chase, please.”

“So, we’re back from the military…and the thing you miss about that environment is thebrotherhoodof it all. The structure. Us against them. Chase’s dad seemed to have things figured out. He’d never been in the military, but I liked his ideas and I became one of the first patches in the Twisted Reapers.”

“Okay…and Chase?”

“Chase was a teenager, being raised by a single dad. I don’t know if it was because he was a teenager or he had some kind of legitimate beef with his old man, but they didn’t get along.”

“I see,” Lara takes another bite and I can’t help but admire how she does it. I’ve been finding myself staring at her a lot these days.

“Chase finished school and then he enlisted. Not to be likemeor anything, he just wanted to get away from his dad. He spent a lot time there and saw a lot of action. In fact, he was probably one of the best recruits they had.”

“Wow, I had no idea.”
