“Come on, let’s play.”

Chapter Twenty

Nick

It’s been a month…and things are good. Club business has been going like clockwork. There’s been no sign of Malcolm. Our last cargo run went off without a hitch and everything is just…good.

Chase Hennig is like a new man…and though we’ll talk about it amongst ourselves in hushed tones, we don’t want to jinx it…so we don’t say it out loud.

We accept him and don’t talk about the way heusedto be. We’re treating him like he’s been born again. I know that’s a strange analogy to make, but whatever Lara did to him…it’s worked.

At first, I was confused, then worried that she’s been spending so much time with him, but turns out all he really needed was a friend.

Lara told me they don’t talk about personal things. They started by playing board games, then video games, then when Chase was healed, he started coming by the clubhouse more often and hanging out.

It’s as simple asbeing there. You don’t have to relive the past and dwell on it. Sometimes you just need to know another person is with you and feels the same things. It’s about not beingalone.

It’s about positive energy—and if anyone has that…it’s Lara. She has it in spades!

I don’t know why Chase didn’t reach out to any one of us in the past to make this happen…but maybe it was the fact that Lara reached out to himfirst.

She told me the story about how she gave him a bottle of whiskey and he didn’t drink it…and that’s how she knew he wanted to change.

Dom is really impressed by Chase’s new attitude, as are we all.

He’s participating in activities with the rest of us…and while progress has been a little slow in the camaraderie department…we’re getting there.

At least he doesn’t have a derogatory comment for everything that happens now.

These days we can actually see a smile on Chase’s face…and if he’s got nothing nice to say, he just won’t say anything at all.

That’s how everyone should be.

I think we forget that sometimes.

Things are going great with me and Lara! I don’t know how she manages to split her time with everyone, but she’s just amazing! Sometimes I wonder how we ever got along here without her.

I’m dreading the end of her stay with us…not only because of what we do in the bedroom…but also because it feels like she’s the glue that holds this whole place together.

The clubhouse feels like a home now…not just a place where we all meet once a week.

There’s always a warm smile and a meal to greet you when you visit…and in my case…sex!

The only problem is I can’t take her home with me because Cassidy is there, we promised each other that I wouldn’t bring Lara over if she didn’t bring Rick over.

I think that’s fair…I mean, Idefinitelydo not want to hear my younger sister getting boned by a club member.

That’s pretty much how she’d feel about me boning her best friend.

Now that I think about it, we’re too old to be living in the same house anyway. It’s just how this town is—you end up staying in the house your parents left you.

I stayed at the clubhouse last night with Lara. She’s still asleep, curled up in my arms.

I’m so in love with her, I could stay right here, like this for the rest of my life. She’s perfect in every way imaginable. Sometimes I can’t believe that she’s mine and that we can have moments like this.

How many people get to grow up knowing the person they’ll fall in love with?

It really is a gift.
