I hear a buzz and we go through a two-panel glass door. A large, pink man with a floppy haircut meets us at the foot of the stairs with his hand out, “Ted Borland, I’m the building manager.”

We shake with him.

He looks Nick and up and down with a smile, “You’re with the MC, huh? I suppose we might be able to work out some kind of discount forMyersfavorite sons. Come on, it’s this way.”

The building is nice and clean. There are three units at the bottom and mailboxes in the foyer. Ted leads us up the flight of stairs and to the left, then opens up the first door we come to.

It looks like there are four units on this floor.

“You guys take a look, I won’t get in your way,” he hands us a card. “My number’s on there. Take your time. If you like it, give me a call and we’ll work something out.”

“Thanks,” Nick shakes hands with him, then Ted nods and leaves.

I’m already inspecting the place by the time he closes the door.

Plush, beige carpeting. Two bedrooms, one with an adjoining bathroom. There’s a big living room, a nice dining area and a guest bathroom.

“Do the appliances come with it?”

“I think so,” Nick steps to a window to see the view, “this is good!”

“It is!” I’m genuinely impressed. “All this stuff looks brand new. He’s even giving you a discount for being in the MC.”

“Tons of space, a nice view, top of the range appliances. Do you like the kitchen?”

“I love it!”

Nick comes and takes me in his arms with a big smile, “So what do you say?”

“Well, if you can afford it, I’d definitely go for it. He did say he’d give you a discount.”

He kisses me slow and deep…I get lost in the sensation of his lips on mine…his tongue on mine…our bodies pressed up against each other’s. He pulls away slowly, “That’s not what I meant.”

“Okay, whatdoyou mean,” there’s still a smile on my face from the kiss.

“I mean…uh…” he looks a little uncertain. I’ve never seen Nick like this.

“What?” I pinch him and give him a peck on the lips. “You can tell me. Just say it!”

“Well…what if we moved in together?”

Okay…I wasn’t expectingthat!

“Just think how great it would be! A place just for ourselves, no club stuff, just you and me, we can just be together. I love you, Lara.”

I take his hands off my waist and step back. “I love you too, Nick. And it’s great you want to get an apartment and youknowI’ll visit every chance I get, but…”

“But?”

“But, I’m leaving in a month. I have to start my residency. I don’t belong here.”

He gets a sad look on his face and for the second time today, I feel like dirt.

“Please don’t be sad, it’s not like you didn’t know this was going to happen. I’m still going to visit. I mean, I have areasonto visit now. It’s not only Cassidy that I’m going to be coming to see.”

Now he looks angry, “Is it because of what that waitress said?”

I don’t know…maybe a little, but I don’t say that. “No, it’s got nothing to do with that. This was always the plan. And you know, even if I did get a place in town, it would be myownplace. I’m not ready to live with someone else.”
