“Hey,” I hear Chase’s voice.
“Hey,” Stacey and I both greet him as he pulls up a stool next to me.
Believe it or not, Chase can actually drink like a normal person now. He wasn’t an alcoholic in the traditional sense. The stuff hardly didanythingto him, that’s why he had to have so much of it.
He liked to get black out drunk to sleep.
He also liked tostaydrunk so that his thoughts wouldn’t wander away with him.
Chaseiscapable of sipping a beer like everyone else.
“What brings you by?” I ask.
“You,” he smiles.
“Ooh! Well it’s certainly nice to be wanted,” I smile too.
Stacey rolls her eye at me, then asks Chase, “Want a beer?”
“Sure,” he says, then turns to me. “What did you get up to today?”
“Apartment shopping with Nick. He found a really good one.”
“Nice. Any plans for dinner?”
“Why? You wanna take me somewhere nice?”
Chase laughs, “Yeah, right…inthistown! If you don’t mind a long ride we could go somewhere though? Do you want to?”
“But then we’d have to ride home in the dark with full stomachs!”
“Mm, you’re right. Is anyone else around today?”
“Nope, you know no one tells me anything. I have no idea where they are or when they’ll be back.”
Stacey puts a beer down for Chase. He thanks her and takes a sip. “I bought some steaks, why don’t we go to my place, we can cook…maybe watch a movie or something?”
“Okay, yeah, that sounds like a plan.” As I’m agreeing, I see Stacey staring at me with her mouth open.
“What?” I ask her.
She puts her hands on her hips and shakes her head, “Nothing…absolutely nothing.”
Chapter Twenty-Two
Chase
After my beer, Lara follows me home and by the time we got there, we’re both starving, so we get to work in the kitchen.
As a side for our steaks, we roast potatoes, carrots, onions and butternut in the oven.
Lara pan fries the steaks with a marinade she invents from whatever she can find and she does it perfectly!
We eat slowly, talking about our favorite movies, and have a bottle of wine that Lara brought with her. It goes down well with the fillet.
When dinner is over, Lara decides to make some popcorn and show meThe Godfather Part Two…because I’d never seen it.
