“She’s having Braxton-Hicks contractions, or at least that’s what she said. I think you need to find Adrian. We should take her to the hospital.”

Brian shoves his feet into his flip flops and races out of the private pool area. When the gates creak shut behind him, Savannah drapes an arm over my shoulders and squeezes.

She uses her free hand to take out her phone and scrolls through it.

“Okay, you need to breathe deeply. I’m not getting the best signal right now, so I can’t really look anything up.” Savannah tosses the phone onto her own lounge chair and pushes me back.

I’m lying on my back with pillows under my upper body, staring up at the clear blue skies.

Savannah is stroking my arm and muttering to herself when her phone rings. Her fingers are slippery, and she drops it a few times. “What?”

Savannah pauses and gives me a confused look. “What do you mean you can’t find Adrian? He has to be on the ranch.”

“Check the stables,” I say, in between heavy panting. “Or maybe the cabin. He said he was doing some manual labor round the ranch today.”

Whatever that meant.

Another wave of pain washes over me, and I cry out.

Savannah hangs up and dials emergency services. Then she helps me to my feet, and we hobble out of the private pool area, and in the direction of the main cabin.

There, Savannah helps me sink into the nearest chair and hurries over to Maureen.

Moments later, Savannah helps me change and Maureen grabs the duffel bag I prepared for when I went into labor.

My eyes widen. “I don’t think I’ll need that yet.”

Savannah takes the duffel bag from Maureen and sets it on the floor beneath my feet. “Better safe than sorry.”

“We’re still trying to reach, Mr. Steele, but he’s not answering.” Maureen glances from Savannah to me and then back again. “Is there anything I can do to help?”

“Make sure the security team knows that an ambulance is on the way,” Savannah says. “With any luck, it won’t be much longer.”

In the distance, the familiar siren sound slices through the air.

Savannah and Maureen each take one arm and help me hobble outside, into the summer air. A warm breeze drifts past as we wait on the porch.

The ambulance is heading towards us, kicking up dust and gravel as it does. On the last step, I stop, bend over, and squeeze Savannah and Maureen’s hands.

There’s a low gushing sound, and I feel something trickle down the inside of my thighs seconds as my water breaks. Savannah says something, but I can’t make out what it is.

Suddenly, I’m being helped onto a gurney, and Savannah doesn’t let go of my hand until they hoist me up. I wave at Maureen as Savannah climbs into the back of the ambulance with me.

The doors slam shut, and it drives off.

A dark haired man in a black and blue uniform is standing opposite Savannah and holding my wrist. “Ma’am, how far along are you?”

“Eight months,” I wheeze, in between heavy breaths. “I’m having twins.”

“Your pulse is thready. I’m going to need you to put on an oxygen mask.” He opens a cupboard and helps me secure the mask.

Then he sits down and takes out a pressure cuff. I fix my gaze on Savannah who is holding one of my hands and using her other hand to send messages on her phone.

Once we reach the hospital, they put me in a wheelchair and wheel me through a set of double doors. The smell of disinfectant hits me first, followed quickly by the smell of sweat.

Then I’m being wheeled down a blue hallway, and a group of doctors and nurses in scrubs descends upon me.

Savannah is struggling to answer with their questions when I hear Adrian’s familiar voice.
