On our way out, I hold the door open for Danielle as she steps through. Then I hurry after her, slowing to a brusque yet even pace.

She is clutching the straps of her gym bag like her life depends on it.

I keep trying to brush my hands against hers, but I can’t.

She’s as stiff as a statue, and each time I move closer, she shifts away.

Like she can’t stand to be around me.

All too quickly her cabin materializes. She quickens her pace. “Well, this is me. You didn’t have to walk me to the cabin, you know.”

I stop at the foot of the stairs. “I wanted to.”

Danielle twists to face me, a myriad of emotions dancing across her face. “I’m sure you have better things to do.”

“I can’t think of anything else I want to do.”

Danielle raises an eyebrow. “Really?”

I nod and give her a small smile. “Really.”

She takes a step back and climbs up the stairs. At the top, she pauses to toss her hair over her shoulders and look at me. “I guess I’ll see you around.”

I offer her a bigger smile. “Definitely.”

After throwing another look in my direction, she uses her card to open the door. Then she ducks inside, without a backward glance.

I stare after her until the door clicks shut, and I’m left alone again.

Through the slit in the curtain, I spot her peering at me. With a shake of my head, I make my way back to my office… hmmmm… that was strange!

I am shuffling papers and scowling at my screen when Brian messages me to come to his room. I leave my office and walk to his room.

Brian takes a long sip of his drink. “What’s happening in your love life. You have a woman?”

I ignore the flutter in my chest. “What woman?”

“I know what you’re like when you like someone,” Brian continues as if he hasn’t heard me. “You get all moony-eyed, and you become hyper-focused on everything like you’re trying to make sure everything goes according to plan.”

I lean back against my chair and eye Brian over the rim of my glass. “What’s your point?”

“You two get in a fight or something?”

I don’t want Brian to know about Danielle.

Not yet.

I’m not ready to share her with the world.

Still, as I sit across from Brian, the two of us lost to our own thoughts, I wonder what it would be like to confide in him.

Especially when I don’t remember the last time the two of us had a normal conversation that didn’t revolve around Brian and his life.

So I have nothing to say where Danielle is concerned.

And I have no idea where she and I stand.

Her attitude makes me wonder if she really was tired today, or if she has some kind of issue with me.
