He scowls. “I’m not on drugs. What kind of dumbass do you think I am that I would do drugs while taking those medications?”

“Are you a dumbass? Because if you are, and you’re not serious about getting your shit together, then don’t waste my time.”

Brian stands up. Water sloshes over both sides of the tub.

He reaches for the towel draped over the back of a dresser chair. “So instead of having some compassion for your brother, who had his room broken into, you want to make this about drugs? Are you fucking serious?”

“I am fucking serious,” I respond, with a lift of my chin. “I told you what my conditions were for bringing you here. And I am doing my best to keep you safe—”

“I am taking this seriously,” Brian interrupts, after securing the towel around his waist. “So maybe you should look into whatever shitty security system you have in place that allowed her to break into my room in the first place.”

I dig my nails into my palms.

I don’t want to keep having this fight with Brian, not if he’s lying to me.

Because I can deal with a lot in order to protect my brother.

But the one thing I can’t save him from is himself.

I stare at Brian. “I am looking into it, but if you’re lying, I swear to God—”

Brian crosses over to me and holds my gaze. “I am not. Do whatever test you want. I am clean.”

I study him for a while longer. “Fine. I already have people looking into what happened. I’ll let you know if we come up with anything.”

Anger is pumping through me as I walk out of his room and find myself back in the main cabin in the cool AC air.

As I peel the wet shirt away from my chest, I spot a flicker of movement.

Danielle comes in through one of the side doors, hair plastered to her forehead, and a yoga mat rolled up underneath her arm.

I like her in the tight black yoga pants and a teal tank top.

It makes me want to pull her into an empty storage room and lose myself in her.

Some of the tension leaves my body as I walk over to her and smile. “How are classes going?”

She shifts from one foot to the other. “It’s fine.” She has a serious look on her face.

“Yeah? I’m glad to hear that. I saw you riding earlier. It looks like you’re getting the hang of it.”

Danielle blinks. “Yeah, sure. I guess.”

“I’ve had the most insane day,” I continue, my smile never faltering. “Do you want to go for a walk or something tonight?”

She tilts her head to the side and studies me. “Don’t you have a lot of work to finish?”

“I can make time,” I reply, my smile fading. “Are you okay?”

Danielle clears her throat. “Yeah, I’m fine. Why?”

I make a vague hand gesture. “oh nothing, I was just wondering.” She keeps avoiding making eye contact.

Danielle takes a step back and averts her gaze. “Probably just tired. I’ve had a long day too. Raincheck on that walk?”

“Why don’t I walk you back to the cabin?”

Danielle hesitates then shrugs.
