Without missing a beat, Maureen nods.

I like that she isn’t fazed.

Out of all of the employees here, Maureen is the most professional. I know she can be counted on to keep my brother’s presence under wraps.

Considering the extent of his bad reputation, and the number of people who have taken advantage of him over the years, I feel that the slightest thing could make him relapse.

Brian is here to rest and recover.

Not be hounded by the gossip and curiosity.

And I’ve made it my personal mission to ensure his stay here is smooth and uninterrupted.

After finishing my discussion with Maureen, I go back to my office, slam the door shut and press two fingers to my temples.

I can already tell it’s going to be a long, long day.

Chapter Three: Danielle

A full half an hour has passed, and I’m still waiting for my bag.

Conversation rises and falls around me as I stand here. The smell of sweat and hand sanitizer fill the air.

Sighing, I go through Savanna’s IG profile while I wait.

My lips lift into a half smile when I see her latest selfie, an apple laid out on top of a pile of papers, with Skittles dozing in the background.

Savannah’s hair is piled on top of her head, and she’s got an old t-shirt on. Despite the tightness around her eyes, she looks happy.

I briefly wonder if she’s glad to have me out of her hair for a month.

Savannah and I are close. But still, I can’t help but feel like she’s sick of sharing her extra room with me while I mope.

With a slight shake of my head, I push the thought away and rummage through my carry-on.

After shoving a piece of gum into my mouth, I chew on it and tap my fingers against my thigh.

Sighing, I close the application and switch to the camera.

I take a few selfies, most of them with my head tilted and my lips pressed together.

Then I scroll through them and send a few to Savannah, who responds right away.

My fingers are moving quickly and without preamble when I spot a familiar bag.

Hastily, I tuck my phone away and step forward, pushing past the throngs of people forming a half-circle on either side of the conveyor belt.

When my bag finally rolls up, I hoist it up and grunt.

Pausing, I take my phone out again and take a picture with my bag, adding a quick caption to the bottom.

Savannah’s response is instant, and I know she’s procrastinating again.

My phone buzzes, and my heart skips a beat until I realize it’s a work email sent to the entire staff.

I miss my office already.

And I know my boss was a little too eager to approve my time off.
