I lean back and swing my legs over the side of the bed. When I stand up and place my hands on my hips, Adrian has risen to his feet too. “I don’t know if that’s enough for me. I can’t have lies and secrets in my life. Not again.”

Adrian runs a hand through his hair. “I understand, but there are some things I can’t share with you yet. It’s not because I don’t want to. It’s just complicated.”

I frown. “You said the same thing the other night. You told me that you wanted to be honest with me.”

“I do.”

I make a vague hand gesture, and my stomach clenches. “Is this because you don’t see this going anywhere?”

Adrian shakes his head. “No, that’s not it at all, Danielle. I just think that—”

The rest of his sentence is cut off by the ringing of his phone. He fishes it out of his pocket, presses a button, and frowns. “Look, I just think that—”

His phone buzzes again, louder this time, cutting him off.

I take a few steps back and clear my throat. “You should probably get that.”

“I’ll take care of it later.” He takes a few steps in my direction. “This is important.”

I step into the kitchen and turn my back on him. “It’s probably better if we talk later once we’ve had a chance to process everything that has happened so far.”

Silence stretches between us.

I spin around, and Adrian has both hands in his pockets. A guilty look plays out across his features. “Are you sure?”

I force a smile to my face. “I’m positive. We can find each other later.”

Adrian exhales. “For what it’s worth, I do see a future with you, Danielle. It’s all I’ve been able to see. Ever since I first set eyes on you.”

Without waiting for my response, Adrian spins on his heels and leaves the cabin. In a daze, I grab the sandwich Adrian brought me and eat it over my sink.

Then I take a shower and spend the entire time turning Adrian’s words over and over in my head. When I come out, I’m no closer to understanding him.

With a sigh, I change into my clothes and make my way to Doctor Sheridan’s office.

She’s sitting in her usual spot in the armchair by the window, and she gets up to shake my hand when I walk in.

The door clicks shut behind me, and I lower myself onto the couch, tossing my hair over my shoulders. I link my fingers together and stare at a spot on the wall.

“You seem agitated. How have you been feeling since we last spoke?”

“Confused,” I reply without looking at her. “Adr—, er, Mr. X came to apologize, and he told me that he was falling in love with me. But it didn’t make me feel the way it should’ve.”

Doctor Sheridan wrote something down. “Why not?”

“Because it feels like I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop.”

“Have there been any other incidents since the hike and the pool?”

I swing my gaze over to the doctor’s and sink back against the couch. “No, but, I got drunk at the bar yesterday. And I fell on my ass by the pool and made a fool of myself."

“What happened after that?”

I clear my throat and look away. “He took me back to my room, and we spent some time together. He says he is being as honest with me as he can, but there are things he can't share with me yet. That doesn't make me feel very good about our relationship at all."

Doctor Sheridan studies the clipboard in front of her. “Do you think Mr. X makes excuses to get away from serious conversations? You’ve mentioned quite a few times that he leaves abruptly because he has stuff to take care of.”

I shake my head. “No, that’s the only thing I know he isn’t lying about.”
