“Good!”I kiss him on the cheek, wink at Cara, and then dash away to find my sexy husband.

???

Salvatore is talking to one of his uncles and I decide he needs rescuing. Zio Eduardo smiles at me when I appear at my husband’s side.

“Ah, mia dolce ragazza, I was just congratulating Salvo on his choice of bride.”

Judging by the throbbing muscle in Salvatore’s jaw and the way he’s grinding his molars into dust, Zio Eduardo was doing anything but.

I know a lot of Salvatore’s family are unhappy about our marriage. He was supposed to make a political union, not marry for love. Apparently, the daughter of a rival family is bitching about being passed over, but after Salvatore showed me a photo of her on Instagram, I reckon he dodged a bullet there. I’m not one to diss other women, but this chick is ugly as fuck, with huge fake boobs, piggy eyes, and prominent teeth. Looks aren’t everything and she can’t help being afflicted with bad genes, but the fact she posts tons of homophobic shit on her Insta tells me all I need to know about the kind of person she is.

I nearly sent her a direct message wishing her well and reassuring her there was a handsome horse out there for her.Thankfully, Salvatore dissuaded me from doing so by pointing out her family was already muttering about broken contracts and my insulting Marietta would be the final nail in the coffin.

“Thank you,” I tell Zio Eduardo.“He’s a very lucky man because, unlike dear, sweet Marietta, I don’t need a nosebag when I eat.”

Zio Eduardo looks a bit murderous about me insulting the daughter of a rival mafia family but he thinks better of saying anything else in front of Salvatore. With a fake smile, he nods at both of us and drifts away in the direction of the bar.

Salvatore doesn’t wait for Eduardo to be out of earshot before he starts laughing.“You can’t say shit like that,” he chuckles.“Respect is a big thing in our world.”

I shrug.“Do you regret marrying me?”I’m being serious and from the way his laughter fades, he knows it.

“Tesoro, I don’t regret anything.”He cups my face in his big hands and smiles.“You saved my life in more ways than one, and if my family doesn’t appreciate you, that’s their problem.”He leans down and kisses me, stealing all the oxygen from my lungs.

“Your dad is definitely not a fan,” I point out when we break apart. I’m pretty sure my cheeks are now as pink as my Disney princess dress.

“Eh, it doesn’t matter what Dad thinks. Mom loves you, and she’s the boss in most things.”

Salvatore’s mom is lovely. A typical Italian-American overprotective mama whose love language is food. I swear I’ve gained at least ten pounds in the last month thanks to her habit of filling our refrigerator with all kinds of goodies.

We head away from the lights and crowd, Salvatore’s arm tightly around my waist. Armed guards lurk in the shadows, but I barely give them a second glance. This is my life now and as long as I am with Salvatore, nothing else matters.

“Where are you taking me?” I ask eventually, when it’s clear this isn’t a short moonlit stroll.

“It’s a surprise.”

I slam the brakes on instantly, digging my heels into the turf and forcing him to stop.“I don’t like surprises.”

He turns around to face me.“You’ll love this one.” Then he starts walking again, ignoring my huffs of displeasure.

A helicopter comes into view and my jaw drops.“What the fuck?”

“We’re going on our honeymoon, tesoro.”

“But I thought you had to work?”

“I lied.”

“Lying to your wife is not a good basis for a marriage,” I grumble.

“Get in the helicopter before I’m forced to spank your ass in front of the pilot.”The way his eyes flare with heat tells me he’s hoping I’ll disobey so he can punish me. Definitely not now, because there’s no way he’ll expose my ass to a random pilot, but later. I can’t say I’m opposed to the idea and my nipples pucker with excitement.

“Where are we going?” I ask as Salvatore straps me into a seat.

“It’s a surprise.”

“You know I really hate surprises.”

“I promise you’ll love this one.”He smiles at me then the engine starts and all conversation ceases just as I remember I have literally nothing with me, not even a toothbrush. It better be a good surprise or I’ll be filing for divorce within 24 hours.
