“Shhh, angel. I got you. Everything is gonna be okay.”

The deep timbre of his voice mixed with that divine Italian accent has me forgetting my priorities for a moment. Without my mind’s consent, my body nuzzles closer, my nose burying against the warm skin of his neck.

“Santino, get Agosti,” Tiero orders.

That pulls me out of my stupor.

Why is his doctor here?

Oh no! He really knows, doesn’t he?

My head is spinning as to what that means for me. I’m going to be sick! For real!

What am I going to do now?

My heart races like a galloping horse. My hands turn into a fist as my body tenses with each passing second.

Think, Ella, think.

There has to be a way out of this.

The fainting was such a half-baked plan. Rhia and I should have thought it over more.

Now we’re all separated, and I’m going to be alone with the man who’s determined to be my undoing.

Where is the anger that made me run? I need it. Pronto!

These reawakened feelings can’t be good.

Come on, Ella. Get mad.

A door opens and a wave of warm air hits my face.

Tiero lowers me onto the bed, still holding my head in the crook of his arm. I hear him fluffing cushions before carefully releasing me.

He strokes my cheek, his breath caressing my skin.

Silence ascends over the room, the crackling in the fireplace our only companion.

Tiero’s gaze is focused on me, of that I’m certain.

I don’t dare move, struggling to keep my breathing even. Meanwhile, my stomach mimics a clothes dryer—round and round it goes.

The tension in the room is becoming oppressive. I fight the urge to get up and run from this situation. Not that Tiero would let me.

How much longer can I fake being unconscious?

Tiero finally speaks, the deep timbre of his voice soothing and melodic. He’s lost the frantic worry and is now back to the steady calmness I’m used to from him.

“I know you’re awake, princess. Your breathing is shallower than when you are asleep. Please open your eyes.”

Crap.
