“Never shoot at her again,” I shout as I throw a kick at his balls.

So consumed in my rage, I notice too late that the pickup is almost out of sight.

Fuck!

I cannot lose the only lead I have on her.

That’s when I hear Antonio on the phone to Uberto. “Black pickup truck heading south. Number plate TFT-333. Get eyes on it and let us know where it’s heading. Send two cars to the shed.”

Thank God someone is thinking clearly. I nod at Antonio.

Moments later, our cars arrive and we jump in. Santino is driving with Uberto on speaker. Ella and her companions have a head start. Whoever is driving is doing a good job of getting away from us.

In the city, Uberto can use the traffic camera network to monitor them, but beyond that, it won’t be as easy.

We need to catch them before that happens.

Ella, my princess, stop running. I’ve come to make things right.

If only she could hear me.

Maybe she can?

Listen to me, angel. Stop. Wait for me, I pray.

I grip the edge of my seat as Santino barrels down the road in hot pursuit of the pickup. We can just make it out at the end of the long, straight road ahead.

“Don’t lose her,” I say to both Santino and Uberto as I undo the top button of my shirt. It’s too hot in here.

“I’ve got visuals,” Uberto confirms. “They’re turning left at the end.”

“Go faster,” I urge.

I refuse to let her slip away!

Horns blare as we weave in and around cars that are too stupid to get out of our way.

“You’re closing in,” Uberto informs us.

I have to take his word for it; we can’t see the pickup. “Make a right turn at the end of the street,” he instructs.

My thoughts whirl as the sound of roaring engines fills the air. The pickup comes into view just as we turn.

Fuck!

My heart stops.

Whoever is driving runs a red light without hesitation. I hold my breath. The world around us spins in a blur. More horns blare and honking echoes as a semi-truck barrels through the intersection, just missing the tail of Ella’s car.

I pinch the bridge of my nose hard, exhaling heavily.

Fuck, that was close.

I’ll put a bullet in that driver’s head. Nobody jeopardizes my angel’s life like this.

With each passing moment, we inch closer to her. Santino is burning rubber to cut through corners. Tires squealing, we narrow the distance between us. I can almost taste victory.

Come on. Come on. Come on.
