I shook my head. Was I that scary? I decided I wasn't. I was scared of the seniors back in the day, so maybe it was a little kid thing.

I wove my way through the crowd of hurrying students and teachers. They all seem to be headed in the opposite direction. Typical.

I stopped in front of what I assumed was the newspaper office. The first hint was the words 'school newspaper' written across the door. Either this was the place, or it was a trick to confuse guys like me.

The door was ajar, so I peered inside.

Bec sat alone at a table in the corner, a sandwich in one hand, pen in the other. A bottle of water sat on the table in front of her. Whatever she was doing, she looked focused. I probably look like that on the field. She looked one hundred percent more adorable doing it.

I watched her for a while, until I realised I'd stood there for a good five minutes.

I knocked on the door.

She jumped and looked up sharply. "Oh."

I pushed the door open. "Sorry, didn't mean to scare you. I just wanted to show you something." I swear, I didn't mean that in any sexual way. Until she blushed.

Holy shit, why did this girl make my pulse race like no one I ever met before?

I held up the paper in my fist. I tried to speak but nothing would come.

"You can come in if you like," she said. At least one of us had a command of their voice box.

I stepped inside and closed the door behind me.

"I got my poetry analysis back." I pulled out a chair, turned it around and straddled it. I slapped the paper down on the table in front of her. "You were wrong."

For a moment she looked panicked. Then she picked up a corner of the paper and tentatively peeled it back.

"Oh!" She opened it all the way. "You did so well."

Her words gave me a surge of satisfaction. Almost equal to a touchdown. I never thought anything would come close to that feeling, but here I was.

I grinned. "Mr Leggit said it needs more sex."

Bec laughed, just like I hoped she would. "Where those his exact words?"

I shrugged one shoulder. "Not his exact words, no, but I'm pretty sure that's what he meant. In fact, now I think about it, I think he was trying to say that everything needs more sex."

Bec laughed again. "I'll take your word for it."

Damn, the way she smiled made my heart jump. I glanced down at the table, then back up again into her blue eyes.

"I just wanted to say thank you. I couldn't have pulled this off without you."

"Yes, you could," she said. "But you're welcome. I'm happy for you." There was something more to her words. A sudden sadness in her eyes.

I had no idea what brought on the change. Was it something I said? I thought back to the last two minutes, but couldn't think of anything.

"I'm happy for me too," I said jokingly. "I'm glad to be one of your many success stories." I knew she'd tutored other students, I couldn't see how they would be any less successful than me.

She smiled faintly. "You can do anything if you put in the work. All you needed was someone to help you focus. And to remind you to take a break once in a while."

"And watch superhero movies more often," I added.

"That too," she agreed.

"I was wondering," I said slowly, "if you would keep tutoring me?"
