I groaned, running my hand over my face.

“This is going to give us nothing,” I ground out, taking a step away from the computer. I didn’t want to see any more of this shit.

“I have a guy,” Grant breathed, exhaling deeply. “He can look into this for us. Give you a better idea of what you’re dealing with here.”

“Did he ever touch her?” George asked, and his inquiry set my blood on fire.

“I don’t think he hurt her physically, no,” I replied, but I wasn’t sure if that was the truth.

“Her parents are loaded, that obvious,” Grant cut in.

“Richer than you?” I asked, leaning my weight against the wall.

He smirked. “Well, we’re going to find all of that out. My guy can dig up dirt on anyone, especially the kind of things people want to keep hidden. That would give you a leg up in the case her family did find her here.”

“What about security?” I asked, hating how little I had to protect her and our kid from these people other than my body and the pistol I kept in my safe.

“You have cameras inside and outside the bar, don’t you?” George asked.

“I’m talking about bodies on the ground, like you had for Moira back in the day.”

Grant considered this, tilting his head from side to side. “I’ll make a few calls.”

“Thanks,” I breathed, feeling worse than I had when I arrived. The picture of her and Jonah together seared into my subconscious and curled its talons in tight, shredding what little resolve I had left.

Sierra wasmine. No one could have her but me.

Grant closed his laptop and took his phone from his pocket while George and I saw ourselves out of his house.

But George put himself between me and my truck.

“She’d be safer up here,” he said in a low whisper. “Out of town, somewhere with only one way in and out—”

“She’s safest with me.”

“You wouldn’t have come up here if you didn’t think she was in serious trouble—”

“I don’t know what to think about a lot of things right now,” I admitted, hating the bite in my voice as I stared down my best friend. George only nodded, seeing that fury ebbing behind my eyes.

“Do you love her?” he asked.

“I don’t know—”

“You either do, or you don’t.” He took a step toward me. “We have an extra bedroom here, at my house. We’ll have plenty of space for her at Edgewater in a few weeks’ time—”

“I’m not going to force her to run again. If I can’t protect her—protect them both—then who can?”

“Let us help you.”

“You’ve helped enough.” I swallowed back my pride and jealously and looked him square in the eye. “I’ll think about it. I still don’t know if that was her mother, but I’m not going to force her into hiding. Her parents kept her under lock and key and I refuse to do that same.”

“I understand,” George breathed, looking a little more than annoyed.

I bit my lip, toying with the weatherstrip on the truck’s window before asking, “If I go to jail for murder, will you step up for Sierra and our kid?”

“Of course,” he replied lightly, snorting with laughter. “You gonna asking me to be the godfather, or should I just assume—”

“Will you be?” I asked in all seriousness.
