He only smiled and nodded, a flash of pride behind his eyes.

“Yeah, I will. Does that mean you know for sure if that baby is yours?”

“It doesn’t matter. I’ll be that baby’s father no matter what that test says.”

“And if it’s Jonah’s baby?”

“That kid will never know,” I whispered, more to myself than to George.

George nodded grimly and stepped away so I could get in my truck.

“Think about it,” he said in farewell, tipping his dust-covered cowboy hat me before he turned on his heel and walked into the night.

Sprays of stars illuminated the highway as I drove toward town. My mind was blank as I pulled my truck into the parking lot of the grocery store around the corner from the downtown strip.

I walked home, my hands tucked in my pockets as I peered at the faces of the people walking in groups across streets as they went made the nightly rounds. The bar was busy for a weekday. I went inside the bar just to see if Jonah was there, now that I knew what he looked like.

I’d had Grant print out one of his pictures. It was clutched in my hand as I walked behind the bar where Jules and Wes were slinging drink after drink.

“Wes,” I demanded. He turned to me, brow arching as I unfurled the picture and tucked it next to the cash register. “If this man comes here, you call me immediately. I don’t care if it’s the middle of the night. He doesn’t leave until I can talk to him face to face.”

Wes nodded. “Is this about Sierra?”

“Yeah. Let the others know.”

I walked upstairs then, unlocking the door and taking off my shoes. The apartment was quiet, just how I’d left. I crawled into bed beside Sierra a few minutes later and held her close as I fought for sleep.

I would distract her tomorrow until I heard back from Grant. I’d take her shopping because that was the only thing I knew I could do that she would like.

Shopping for baby stuff. Our baby.Mybaby.

Jonah be damned.

Chapter Twenty

Sierra

“Whoa,” I whispered, pressing my nose to the windshield as a behemoth of a building that rose in the distance. “What is that?”

“A shopping mall,” Pete quipped, snorting as I glanced at me. “Ever seen one?”

“Not one the size of a small town,” I admitted.

“I’m pretty sure half of it is office space,” he continued, shrugging. “Maybe an underground bunker or something, too. It’s huge. Keely dragged me here a few years ago and I remembered it had a big baby store in it, so I thought we could check it out.”

“Baby store,” I repeated, mostly to myself.

“You’ve really never been to a mall before?”

“I had to wear designer, even to bed,” I replied, feeling a little silly about the whole thing. “I went shopping in New York City, mostly.”

Pete arched his brows, giving me a sarcastic smile. “And now look at you—wearing jeans from Costco.”

“Well, you bought them for me. And you haven’t been able to stop staring at my ass all day.”

His eyes narrowed into slits as he gave me a feline smile.

“Scoot over here,” he commanded, the corner of his mouth twitching.
