“That’s unsafe,” I chided, but undid my seatbelt and scooted over to sit next to him. We were already driving at crawl through the enormous parking lot outside of the mall. He roped his arm around my shoulders as he pulled into a spot near the back. It was nothing but highway and golden fields beyond the parking lot, everything covered in a thin sheen of icy water after another crisp, autumn downpour.
We made out for a while, and something about how public in nature it was sent heat pooling between my thighs. I felt like a lovesick teenager hiding her crush from her parents as his tongue slid over mine and his warm hands groped my breasts.
“I’d pull your pants down right now,” he growled in my ear, “but I don’t want everyone seeing what’smine.”
“Maybe we can find a fitting room,” I said breathlessly as his hand slid into my jeans.
He choked on a groan as he felt how wet I was. “Good God,” he breathed, nuzzling my neck as I started to grind against his touch. “Keep doing that, baby.”
The idea that anyone could be walking by left my mind as I rode his touch to completion, my body racked with tremors as I bit down on his shoulder to stop myself from screaming his name. Pete was panting and pink in the face when I looked up at him and met his eyes.
“You’re a fucking goddess,” he said, removing his hand from my jeans.
I started to reach between us to undo his pants but he shook his head.
“I have plans for you later that don’t involve being crammed in my truck,” he said wickedly.
I sighed breathlessly, overcome with heat and… and sudden, rushing emotion for this man who I was falling in love with at every passing second, that I’d completely forgotten I now had to go walk around a mall with him.
“You were seducing me on purpose,” I said, glowering at him. “You got me all riled up—”
“You think I’m not riled up?” He chuckled, kissing me tenderly. “Now I have to watch you walking around all day, swaying those hips…” He gripped my hips and I squeaked in surprise. “Everything about you turns me on, Sierra.”
I blushed. No one, and I mean no one, had ever said anything like that to me. Jonah had never called me a goddess. He’d never said I turned him on. Pete, on the other hand, couldn’t keep his hands off of me.
“We need to get inside before I change my mind and take you right here, right now—”
“I wouldn’t mind,” I breathed, brushing a kiss right behind his ear. He groaned and pulled away from me.
“Out, let’s go buy some shit,” he said, heaving a breath as he looked over my face and neck at the heated blush there.
So, I followed Pete into the mall feeling all kinds of undone. Watching him walk so casually, his hands tucked in the pockets of those jeans that looked like they’d been made to fit his body like a glove, had me thrumming with desire. He’d done this to me on purpose. Pete liked to tease, I knew that by now, but he was taking full advantage of my pregnancy hormones that had me acting and feeling like a feral, insatiable beast in heat day in and day out.
At least, I told myself that was the reason. Not because I was so incredibly attracted to every part of him, mind, body, and soul.
By the time we made our way to the baby store he was talking about, some of that had started to fade and was replaced another insatiable feeling—hunger.
“What’s the matter?” he asked as I thumbed through a rack of the tiniest clothes I’d ever seen in my life.
“I’m starving,” I said in a clipped tone that made me wince.
“Could’ve guessed.” He laughed.
“I think it’s too early to do this kind of shopping,” I said over my shoulder. “Everything will just sit around for months and months until we need it.”
“What about a crib?”
“Moira said the crib they had George make for Holly has been used as storage since she was born,” I replied, frowning at a tower made of diaper boxes and baby toys.
“Why?”
“Because Holly won’t sleep it in. She sleeps in Moira arms.”
“Oh, great,” Pete huffed.
“We have no idea what we’re getting into, do we?”
“Absolutely not,” he agreed with a laugh. “Poor kid.”
