Mac stood and walked toward the door.

“Where are you going?” she asked.

Mac stopped, glancing from one to the other. “Ah..uhm..bathroom.” He hurried past Harker and out of the room.

“I told you he was smart,” he joked, hoping to lighten the mood.

“Go away.” She turned back toward the computer, dismissing him.

“Come on. You like Mac. This is all working out.”

“Go to hell.”

“I told you. I’m already there.”

“That’s right. Masturbatory hell.” Her eyes dropped to his crotch. “You should go somewhere private.”

“Right now, I’m in regular hell because you’ve been avoiding me.” He paused, his anger slipping away. “I miss talking to you. I think we should stop playing this game.”

“You concede?” She stared at him a challenge in her eyes. “I didn’t think you were a quitter.”

“I’m not quitting. We’ll call it a draw.”

“No. I still plan on winning.” She winced. “Shit.”

“Don’t worry. That wasn’t today’s phrase.”

“Good. Now go away.”

“You need to eat.” He walked over to her and squatted. “You could be carrying my child.” He put his hand on her stomach, needing to touch her somewhere, anywhere. “Please Alison, I miss you.”

She frowned at him. “I have work to do. I’ll be home later.” But she put her hand over his and didn’t push him away.

“How much later? I’ll order something. Or cook. You need to eat. You already skipped lunch—”

“I ate lunch.”

“You did?” They always had lunch together, but today she hadn’t come to his office.

“I had lunch with my new employee.”

He hated how fucking pleased she was about that.

“Did you have something for lunch?” she asked.

He wanted to fist pump and shout hallelujah because the smugness in her expression changed to concern. He hadn’t realized how much he missed someone caring about him.

“I know you get busy and forget but you need to eat.”

“No, I didn’t.” He’d had a bagel around ten in the morning, but he hadn’t technically eaten lunch. “I forgot. Usually you remind me but it’s okay.” He tried to look as pathetic as possible. “I can wait for dinner. Whenever you have time is fine.”

She sighed as she brushed a strand of hair off his forehead. “No, we’ll go have dinner, but this doesn’t mean that I forgive you.”

“Got it.” He stood, taking her hand in his and pulling her to her feet.

“And this doesn’t mean that we’re having sex tonight either.”

“Understood.” Oh, they were so having sex tonight. She’d let him touch her and that meant he’d get around those bases and make it home at least one time tonight.
