“No.” She frowned. She knew what was coming next and she didn’t want to hear it.

“You should text him that you’re okay,” said Ellie.

“Why? It’s not his business. I’m not his business. Not anymore.” She touched her stomach, ignoring Ellie’s frown and going back to their conversation. “There’s no law but from the research I did it’s best for the baby to be with the mother at night until the child is between four to nine months old. That’s almost another year and I just can’t live with him that long. I can’t.” She took a shaky breath.

“Are you sure?” asked Ellie.

“Yes.” Alison dropped her head on the table. “I can’t stand him.”

“Oh, honey.” Ellie ran her hand over Alison’s head. “I’m sorry it’s so hard. If he’s being too much of a jerk just let me know. I’ll come and stay with you.”

“We both will,” said Adrian. “And I’ll kick his ass if he even looks at you wrong.”

“He’s not being an ass.” Alison sat up, wiping her eyes. “That’s the problem. He’s being nice and sweet and…” She took a shaky breath. “And I can’t keep my hands off him.”

“Excuse me?” Ellie looked at Adrian who was staring at Alison with a confused look on his face.

“It started today. Before that I didn’t want to be near him but today…If I get a hint of his scent, I’m so horny and…and I don’t want to want him, but,”—she moaned—“I want him so much.” Just thinking about him made her wet and achy.

“And why is that a problem?” asked Adrian. “He’s your husband.”

“Who’s trying to take my baby.” Seriously, men didn’t understand anything.

“But you and your lawyer don’t think he’ll actually do that,” said Adrian.

“And he offered to change the contract,” said Ellie. “So he must not be planning on taking the baby.”

“But only if I stay there.”

“And have great sex.” Adrian shrugged. “I don’t see the issue.”

“Of course, you don’t,” she snapped. “You’re a man.” She looked at Ellie.

“I understand.” Ellie’s phone beeped again. She glanced at it. “Alison, at least text him and tell him you’re okay.”

“Fine.” She grabbed her phone and texted Harker.

“So, let’s go through this again,” said Ellie. “If Harker changes the contract you have to live with him for at least four months after the baby is born and if you stay with the original contract, you’re stuck there until the baby is born, right?”

“Yeah.” Alison could tell by the tone that she wasn’t going to like what Ellie was about to say. Her friend was making her case, trying to lead her to the conclusion that Ellie wanted.

“So enjoy him. You’re attracted to him, and he’s attracted to you.”

“For how long? I’m going to be fat soon and he already isn’t sleeping with me.”

“He moved out of your bed?” asked Ellie.

“Not exactly. I moved into my old room, but I did that once before and when I woke up, he was in bed with me. He insisted that since we were married, we sleep in the same bed. He even made a rule and we both agreed that no matter what, no matter how angry we were with each other we’d sleep together.”

“And now he's not sleeping with you,” said Ellie.

“No. He hasn’t even tried after the first night when I locked the door.”

“What a jerk.” Ellie’s fury made Alison feel much better.

“Maybe he’s just giving you some space,” said Adrian.

The two women glared at him.
