“Goodbye, Adrian.” Ellie laughed.

“Bye, but so you know, I’m going to be late and you’re going to get mad about it.”

“I am?” asked Ellie.

“Yep, and I expect you to be naked on the couch when I get home. See ya.” He winked at her before closing the door.

Ellie turned to Alison. “You know as well as I do that you're crazy about Harker.”

“No, I'm not. I was, but I’m not anymore.” She couldn’t let herself be.

“Are you sure? If you were over him, you wouldn’t be this upset that he isn’t trying to have sex with you.” Ellie paused. “And you wouldn’t still want him. I’ve gone through enough breakups to know that when it’s really over there is nothing left—no anger, no desire, nothing.”

“I know.” Her voice cracked. “I want him. I…I think I might still be in love with him, and it makes me sick. How can I love a man who’d put something like that in our contract? Yes, I should've had a lawyer look it over, but he was my friend. I never would've done that to him.” She sniffed and the tears started rolling down her cheeks. “I don't know what to do. I’m mad at him all the time and I feel like the worst kind of bitch when I’m mean to him. He’s been so nice and understanding. I don’t even know who he is anymore. I get mad when he leaves me alone and mad when he does nice things. I don’t know what’s happening to me.”

“Oh, Alison.” Ellie hugged her. “Honey, you’re just pregnant.”

“How do you know for sure that this is because of the pregnancy?”

“Talk to your mom.”

“I can’t. We’re not telling anyone until the first trimester is over just in case.” She touched her stomach. She didn’t even want to think about something happening to this baby. She loved it so much already.

“Do you want to talk to my mom? She loves you like a daughter.”

“Thanks but I can’t. My mom would be so hurt if I told someone before her. I shouldn’t have told you and Adrian.”

“We won’t say anything. I promise.”

“What am I going to do?” She wiped her eyes. “I need to get over him, but I can’t as long as I’m living there.”

“I suggest”—Ellie took Alison’s hand—“that, right now, you do what your body wants.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“When you wanted sauerkraut, you went and got it, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Was it good?”

“Oh, you have no idea.” She closed her eyes and sighed. “It was so yummy.”

“I’ve never known you to eat sauerkraut before.”

“I’ve had it a few times.”

“Did you ever crave it like this?”

“No.” She had an idea where her friend was going with this. Her brain wasn’t happy, but her body was shouting hallelujah.

“You craved it now because you needed something—vitamins, minerals, something—from it for the baby. Your body knew that, so it made you want it.”

“You’re saying that Harker is like sauerkraut?”

“Yeah.” Ellie grinned. “I wouldn’t have put it quite like that but yeah.”

“So, I should give my body what it wants.”
