“Oh, that’s so sweet.” She smiled, opening her food. It was Hunan Chicken. He’d gotten her order right. She picked out a piece of baby corn.

“That’s me. Sweet.” He opened his container, and she leaned forward, dropping her corn into it.

“Thank you.” His sexy smirk made her smile widen as she gave him all her baby corn.

“So, what should we talk about?” She ate some rice.

“Whatever you…” He frowned at his food as he leaned back in his chair.

“What’s wrong?” She couldn’t keep the smugness from her tone. He’d messed up his order.

“Nothing.” He dug in the carton. “Except they forgot the meat.”

“There’s no meat in there?” She knew there was.

“Very little.”

“Did you order double meat?”

“No.” He glared at her. “Why would I need to order double meat?”

“Because you like extra meat.” She took another bite. It was delicious.

“No. I like the amount of meat anyone would expect.” He dropped the food back into the container. “Not this sprinkling of meat.”

She laughed. “You like meat and a little rice not the other way around. You should’ve ordered extra meat.”

“I would’ve if I’d known I usually got extra meat.” His look and tone were accusing.

“So, this is my fault that you don’t know how to order your food?”

“You could’ve told me you’ve been ordering extra meat for me.”

“I didn’t know you were getting Chinese food. Plus, you said you’d done perfectly fine before you met me. If you needed detailed instructions on how to order your food, it would’ve been easier for me to just do it myself.”

“How am I supposed to know how you order things?” He took another bite and frowned, pulling something from his mouth.

“You didn’t tell them to hold the water chestnuts, did you?”

This time his look almost incinerated her and not in a good way, but she was used to his glares.

“The first time I ordered Chinese food for you, you made me pick through all your rice with a fork to remove the water chestnuts even though, you never told me that you didn’t like them.” She’d wanted to strangle him that day, but she’d waited and today she’d had her revenge. She tried to look innocent as she said, “Did you suddenly think you liked water chestnuts?”

“I forgot about the water chestnuts, but I wouldn’t have if I hadn’t been trying to figure out what food would make you happy. Something that was dinner food, which according to you isn’t sandwiches, and nothing too heavy and was…I don’t know…How did you put it? Oh, that’s right, anything is okay as long as it isn’t something I suggest.” He shoved more food in his mouth, making a face. He must’ve gotten another waster chestnut, but he was too stubborn to spit it out.

“I didn’t want Italian. What’s the big deal?”

“The big deal is that you shouldn’t have said you were okay with anything when clearly you weren’t.”

“I knew you’d be crabby if you ordered.” She took another bite of her food. “It’s going to be a long night of listening to you.” At least she could lose herself in her work. She glanced at the computer. The program was chugging away.

“Close that laptop.”

She jumped. “Oh, sorry. I…” Her eyes darted back to the screen.

“Alison.” There was a warning in his tone as he took another bite of his food.

“It’s just that I have so much to do. The algorithm combining micro expressions with anticipated behavior isn’t going that well. I have a lot of work to do if I’m going to make the next projected deadline.”
