“You’re a partner now. Hire someone.”

“I’m not a partner yet.” She touched her stomach.

“You could be.” His gaze followed her hand.

“Oh…yeah.” She smiled shyly at him. She could be pregnant right now.

“I’ll give you Cormac O’Reilly’s contact info tomorrow. Mac should be able to start—”

“You said that I get to hire my team.”

“You do. That’s why I’m giving you his number.”

“I get to pick my team.”

“You’ll pick him. He’s a genius especially with—”

“I’ll consider him.” She had to fight not to grin at Harker’s frown.

“Fine, but I want you to hire someone tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow? That doesn’t even give me time to interview.”

“No need. Mac is perfect for the job.”

“Says you.”

“I hired you.” He continued to eat.

“Merri hired me.”

“I approved it. So same thing.”

She took a deep calming breath. Arguing with him over the difference between Merri meeting her, interviewing her and hiring her and his approval on a piece of paper wasn’t going to help her with this situation. “But this is my team. I’m going to have to work with these people.”

“No, these people will work for you.’

“I work for you, but I also work with you.”

“You were different.”

A small kernel of warmth sparked in her chest.

“I couldn’t treat you just like an employee.” He closed his container of food. “I needed to get to know you to see if you’d suit as the mother of my child.”

CHAPTER 14: Alison

“Excuse me.” Alison dropped her carton of food on the table. That little kernel of warmth turned so cold it could freeze the Sahara Desert.

“What did I say to piss you off?” Harker actually sounded surprised. “You know what this”—he waved his hand between them—“is or was.”

“Of course. How silly of me. It’s a business arrangement. Don’t worry”—she forced herself to smile while inside she crumbled—“I won’t forget again.” She grabbed her container and turned toward her computer, stuffing food in her mouth so she wouldn’t have to talk to him.

“Alison, look at me.”

“Nope. Got a lot of work to do.” But she did look over at him. “Don’t you have work to do?” She put her carton of food on the computer table. This didn’t make sense. “You’ve been pestering me all day to stop working. Why weren’t you busy working. You had Friday night and Saturday off too.” He should be as behind as she was.

“I had that meeting.”
