“Yeah, it does, but it’s nothing bad. We’re playing a game and I want to win.”

“Is that what all this a-point-for-me has been about?” He took another bite of his sandwich.

“Yeah.”

“What kind of game are you two playing?” He held up his hand. “Forget I asked. I do not want to know. Please, I’m begging you to fight your desire to ramble on with an explanation.”

“Okay.” She laughed. Those kinds of comments used to hurt her feelings, but that stopped when she accepted that she did talk a lot. “I won’t explain but I need your help to win.”

“Win what?”

“The game.”

“I don’t know, Alison. This is your thing not mine.” He finished his sandwich.

“Please. I need to win because I want to know more about Harker.”

“You’ve spent every day with him for almost a year. You know Harker.”

“I don’t know anything about him before I met him.”

“He’s taken you to the Club. You know him better than most.” He picked up his trash and tossed it into the garbage.

“I mean when he was growing up. I know his father was never in the picture and his mother died from an overdose, but that’s basically it. He grew up in foster care and put himself through college.”

“Then you know everything there is to tell.”

“That’s bull.”

“Look. If you want details about Harker’s childhood, you’ll have to ask him.” He grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge.

“That’s exactly what I plan to do.” She grinned. “With your help.”

“Sorry. I’ll pass.” He started to walk away.

“Wait.” She grabbed his arm. “You lived with him in college. You know how he is about losing.”

“He hates to lose. He’s the worst loser I’ve ever met. He’s a grown man and still freaking acts like a toddler when he loses.”

She almost had him. “And if I win, Harker loses.”

“He’ll be furious and then he’ll pout like a giant baby.”

“Yep, and you’ll get to enjoy every minute of it.”

“I’m in.” Tobias grinned. “What do you want me to do?”

CHAPTER 25: Alison

About thirty minutes later, Alison lurked in the hallway outside Harker’s office. It was one of their rules that the other person had to hear the phrase. The fact that they said it couldn’t be delivered second hand.

Tobias was already in the room giving Harker an update.

“When do you meet with the new clients?” asked Harker.

“Tomorrow,” said Tobias. “I’ll let you know how it went.”

Alison held her breath. The trap would be set soon. She leaned against the wall by the door.
